11. An apology.

Lying in the sterile, white hospital bed, I felt utterly exhausted and helpless. The steady beeping of the heart monitor provided an eerie soundtrack to my thoughts as I replayed the events that had led me to this point.

It was just five minutes ago that Mavis left.

Suddenly, the door creaked open, and Dante appeared in my line of sight. My eyes widened in surprise, as I had never expected him to come see me, given the role he had played in my current predicament.

Dante looked incredibly dashing as I scanned him from top to bottom. He had a remarkable talent for carrying off any attire he put on while we were together, and I always found myself admiring him for it.

In all my years of knowing Dante he had always been great to his employees and from where I could see he still is but with last night's events replaying in my head I guess I might not have known him after all.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of bitterness as I remembered the circumstances that had landed me in the hospital bed, a direct result of his careless actions. Yet, despite all of this, here he was, standing in front of me with a concerned look on his face.

He did cheat on me and that's something I would've never thought he'd do in a million years.

Part of me wanted to push him away, to let him know that his visit was unwelcome and unappreciated. But another part of me couldn't help but feel a glimmer of gratitude at the sight of him.

It would take courage for him to swallow his pride and admit that he was in the wrong. Maybe this was the first step towards true reconciliation and forgiveness.

As I lay there, lost in my thoughts, Dante took a few steps forward. He remained completely silent while observing me, as if unsure of what to say to me.

I could sense a newfound humility in him. Perhaps this experience had taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of empathy and compassion towards all his employees.

Dante's voice was laced with regret as he made his promise. "I understand the inconvenience this has caused you and I take full responsibility for it. Please allow me to fully ensure that your medical bills are taken care of, so that you can focus on your recovery without any financial burden."

"Moreover, I insist that you take Monday off as well, to allow yourself ample time to recuperate. And of course, you will be paid for this day too, as it's only fair."

Although Dante's attempt at amends was commendable, the fact remained that a simple "sorry" would have sufficed.

Nevertheless, it was encouraging to see him taking accountability for his actions and making a genuine effort to make things right.

"Thank you."

As if seeing that I was not necessarily moved by his words and the fact that I didn't prolong our talk further the room suddenly fell into awkward silence.

Dante seemed as though he wanted to say something else but was fighting an inner battle.

Despite his earnest efforts, it was clear that Dante's apology still fell short. He seemed to be aware of this, as a hint of disappointment crept into his voice.

"I know that these actions don't make up for the pain and inconvenience that you've endured. However, please know that I'm committed to making things right for you. I will do everything in my power to regain your trust and ensure that something like this never happens again."

Dante's speech felt somewhat highly professional, or perhaps I was overthinking it. I couldn't help but blush at his heartfelt professional words of wanting to improve things between us and wanting to regain my trust.
