"Later," he hissed and exchanged a fleeting glance with her. Serena would put ten brooms to the fire that they had discussed exactly what they were going to say beforehand and indeed her mother turned back to her in response. "We think it would be best if you didn't leave the house again until the end of the holidays."

"I'm grounded?" the Gryffindor summed up her decision, not quite knowing what to make of it. After all, she wouldn't have been allowed to leave the property anyway, but then what her father added made her a little angry. "That includes the garden and this year's visit to Diagon Alley is cancelled too."

Serena's mouth dropped open indignantly. "That's bloody unfair! You're packing me in cotton wool here, when I'm not even the one in danger."

"The danger concerns all of us," he replied merely dryly, narrowing his eyes to slits that seemed to pierce them like silver arrows. Especially when he learned that she had long known what he was trying to hide from her. He turned pale. "You know and you don't care?!"

"Of course I care," Serena answered truthfully. "I'm just trying to make the best of it, but anyway, none of them will kill me because of it."

"Believe me, death might even be more pleasant. Sooner or later they'll take you away from us and then you probably won't see any of us or your friends again any time soon. If you think I'm being unfair, just wait until they get their hands on you."

"But he said..."

"I don't give a damn what that boy says! And if you don't recognise our actions as a safety precaution, then maybe as a punishment!" With each successive word that had left his mouth, he had grown louder and had finally slammed his fist down so hard on the wood of the table that they all cringed.

"Fine," Serena merely breathed, swallowing hard in a pitiful attempt to get rid of the pent-up lump in her throat. His words about what her life might once be like had scared her, scared her badly, in fact. While she hadn't expected it to look particularly rosy, she certainly hadn't expected to be cut off from the outside world like this.
