Two Months Ago

The shrill ring of the phone pierced through the peaceful silence of the home, causing Fabio's heart to jump in his chest. As he answered it, a wave of fear washed over him as he heard his teenage daughter's panicked cries on the other end.

"Hello? Serena? Can you hear me?" His words were met with eerie silence, stretching on and on like an endless abyss.

Tension coiled in Fabio's stomach, a knot tightening with each passing second as he begged the unknown caller for answers, his grip on the phone tightening until his knuckles turned white, veins pulsing with fear.

"Who is this?" he demanded, his voice trembling despite his attempts to remain composed. His wife Maria sat beside him on the edge of the couch, her face pale and hands shaking uncontrollably.

"All you need to know is that I have your daughter," came the cold reply, distorted by an electronic voice changer, like the whisper of a ghost haunting the line. "I assure you, she's unharmed... for now." Every word dripped with malice, sending shivers down Fabio's spine, an icy grip clutching at his heart.

"What do you want?" he seethed, trying to keep his voice steady despite the panic rising within him, his gaze darting to his wife Maria, who sat on the edge of the couch, her face drained of color and her hands trembling uncontrollably.

"A good father," sneered the caller, the words a venomous hiss. "You'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, won't you?"

"Of course I will! Just tell me what you want," Fabio pleaded, desperation creeping into his voice like a shadow swallowing the light. He couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to his daughter.

"Don't worry, old man," a gruff voice spoke up from the other side of the line, rough as gravel grinding against bone. "Your daughter will be fine as long as you do exactly as we say."

"The price is simple," the caller continued, the words hanging heavy in the air like a guillotine poised to fall. "Be my informant."

The demand was simple but impossible for Fabio to fulfill, a dagger twisted in his gut. The caller wanted him to become their informant, to betray the trust of the Castillo family who had taken him in when he had nothing, who had treated him like one of their own. How could he betray their trust?

"I can't," he whispered, feeling like he was being suffocated by the weight of his choices.

"You have 24 hours to decide before I lose the use of your daughter," the voice replied coldly, the words a death sentence hanging over his head like the sword of Damocles. The line went dead, leaving Fabio alone with his thoughts and an impossible decision to make, a noose tightening around his neck.

"No, wait!" he cried out, but it was too late. The caller had already hung up, leaving Fabio alone with his guilt and his fear, drowning in a sea of uncertainty.

"What did they want?" Maria's trembling voice broke through the silence, her eyes wide with dread.

"They want me to betray the Castillos," Fabio replied, his voice heavy with the weight of his confession, his eyes filled with guilt and pain, a storm raging within him.

Maria gasped, a hand flying to her mouth in shock. "We... we can't do that."

"I know," Fabio said, running a shaky hand through his hair, the gesture a feeble attempt to steady himself against the tempest raging within. "I need to talk to Mr. Castillo about this. He'll know what to do."

But as soon as he picked up the phone, a new message appeared on the screen from an unknown number, a harbinger of doom in digital form. With trembling hands, Fabio opened it and read the ominous words:
