Chapter Sixteen

Rip exhaled heavily as he swiveled in his chair to face the others. "Well, that wasn't so bad, was it?" he asked.

"Walk in the park," Leonard quipped, getting up from his seat.

Ayana sounded exasperated. "Where are we now?"

"We've arrived in Washington, D.C., in the year 1986," Rip answered.

"Right in the middle of the Cold War, when the world was on the brink of nuclear warfare."Stein added.

"We're here because I have a lead on Vandal Savage's whereabouts." Gideon's declared, her holographic face appearing.

Rip pulled up a document on the screen and informed the team, "Gideon managed to intercept this telefax about Savage's last known whereabouts."

Jax, Mick, and Ray all looked at the document with confusion. "Tele-what?" Jax asked.

"It's like an email, but on paper," Ray attempted to explain.

"Wow, that's totally useless," Mick commented, unimpressed.

"Dude, this whole thing's crossed out," Jax pointed out.

"Yeah, it's been redacted by the U.S. government. That's why we're here to steal the original file on Savage back from those tracking him," Rip explained.

Ray trailed off, "Uh, that's the..."

"You're joking right?" Evie asked disbelief in her voice.

"Don't worry. We are cloaked," Rip reassured them.

Mick shrugged, "You want us to break into the Pentagon? Sounds awesome."

Kendra disagreed, "It sounds crazy."

"Crazy? Try impossible. Nobody gets in or out those doors without proper identification." Ayana added her own two cents, giving Rip a glare. Leonard couldn't help but smirk at his soulmate's sass.

Sara asked skeptically, "What's the plan?"

Rip told them, "The Fabricator will fashion you the necessary Pentagon credentials."

Ray all but squealed, "Ooh, and don't forget our G-man disguises. I always wanted to be a spy!" Both Ayana and Leonard rolled their eyes in unison at the scientist's enthusiasm.

Rip's voice crackled through the team's communication devices, revealing their next objective. "The file we're after is housed in a heavily guarded records room. To gain access, we'll need to acquire a magnetic key card," he explained.

Ray, busy mopping the floors of the Pentagon, couldn't help but voice his frustration. "Seems like shrinking down and swiping it would be a whole lot easier," he grumbled under his breath.

Leonard, always one to embrace his old-fashioned methods, smirked confidently. "Let me show you how it's done... the old-school way," he mused, ready to demonstrate his expertise.

Sara chimed in, her warning laced with a hint of familiarity. "Be cautious, Azhara isn't one share" she cautioned, using Ayana's former League of Assassins name.

Ayana's teeth clenched upon hearing the telltale sound of slipping shoes and a startled gasp. Her irritation grew as Leonard engaged in conversation with a woman they unexpectedly encountered.

"Are you alright, ma'am?" Leonard's voice grated on Ayana's nerves, and she fought the urge to shout in frustration.

"I wasn't paying attention to where I was going," the woman timidly admitted, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you."
