Anecdotes of Abi and Vetri

TVET - IAS Abiyum Vazhakkarignar Vetriyum - Part 2

AN:- Thank you for all the votes and my heartfelt appreciation for your kind support. In the  first few chapters, I will narrate Abi's story and Vetri's story alternatively. In this chapter, we follow Vetri in the first days in Jail. I have tried to read about the Puzhal Central Jail in Chennai where Vetri would have been jailed and have sanitized a lot of the happenings as this story is not about the happenings in jail. The jail events here are a combination of the Hindi movie Dasvi (Abhishek Bacchan's ), some news items and a few other videos on the jail. Please put up with possible errors and details added for convenience.

We go back to the day  when Vetri was sentenced.

Judge: Intha vazhakkil, puthumaiyaga kutram sattappattavare than thavarai othukkondullar. Ithu oru tharkappukkaga seitha kolai! Thittamitta kolai illai! Kolai seyyappatta nabarukku kutram sattappattavar meethum avar nanbar meethum mun virotham irunthirukkirathu! Avargal vakkuvathathin pothu kolai nadanthullathu. Vetri looks at Nandhini but refuses to look at anyone else. He is taken by the police. After finishing formalities, he is taken to the Puzhal jail in Chennai. He is asked to give all his possessions and undergoes the regular strip and check. Vetri doesnt talk anything other than necessary. One of the jailers scolds him for keeping quiet and he just says sorry. Another jailer says that its a first day thing and he will be alright as days go by. He gets his uniform, a hair and beard trim, and is given a cell with another person. His cell mate is an older man named Ganesan, who also is convicted for murder but his term is for 10 years. Meanwhile, some of the inmates from Kanchipuram (KF) have got the news that Vetri is coming to jail. During the evening meal, some of them come to see Vetri and sit with him.

KF11: Anne! Ennanne! Neenga eppadinne? Poongavanam Annanoda varisa konnutteenga! Athan ungalai matti vittutarunnu solranga!

KF2: Illaida! Vetri Annanthan surrender agittaru! Enne! Neenga chumma irunthirukkalam illai? Enne ippadi senjinga?

KF1: Appadiyanne? Nee sollalainna jailukku vanthirukka mattiya? Enne? Unakku kalyanamagiduchanne? Pullai kutti irukka? Naan jailukku vanthu 2 varusham aguthu! Athan theriyalai!

Vetri looks up at him and nods his head.

KF2: Dei viduda! Innikku motha naalu! Ippadi thaan irukkum. Poga poga pesikkalam. Sarinne! Nalaikku unakku enna velainnu solluvanga! Neenga enna velai seyya poreengannu sollanum. Naan thachu velai seyyarenne! Ivan thaiyal velai seyyaran!

KF1: Dei! Annan nalla padichavaruda! Avungale ethachum koduppanga.

Vetri finishes his meal, nods at them and goes back to his cell. He lies down but sleep doesnt come to him. His mind keeps going back to seeing Nandhini with the knife. And how that moment changed everything, all his plans of a beautiful life with Abi and his child. He silently cries.

Gan: Thambi! Motha naalu appadithan irukkum. Poga poga sariyagidum. Ana azharathu ellam inga cellukkullaye vechukkappa! Velila azharathai pathanganna romba prachinaiyagidum! ellarum unnai eichu kattiduvanga! Inga sila perunga thollai vayala solla mudiyathu. Kaalaila 4:30 manikku enthirikkanum. Athu than namakku nallathu.

V: Thanksne!

He finally manages to sleep after thinking about and longing for Abi and how she was right next to him the previous night.  In the morning, Ganesan wakes up Vetri at 4:30 am.

Gan: Thambi! Thambi ezhunthiru! Ippo pona than bathroomla kanda pasangalum irukka mattanga! Nee puthusu vera! Puthu pasangalai asingam asingama nadathuvanga! Athula evanachum ethuthu pesina ratham vara mathiri adippanunga! Ratham mattum vanthucho, jailor pidichi thanimai chiraila 3-4 naalu naal poduvanga! Superintu vanthu velila vidalainna oru varam kooda thaniya irukkanum. Nee konja naalaikku seekirame ezhunthu bathroom poittu vanthudu! Un peru ennappa? En peru Ganesan! Ellarum thambiyannannu solluvanga!
