Two weeks before your graduation, you were really nervous. Everyone would be there watching you as you step up on stage, and you could very easily trip on your gown or fall through the stage or drop your diploma as you go to take it from the presenter. One little screw-up and it'll be self-torture for you.

Shawn, your boyfriend of eight months, promised you that he would be there on the big day.

Now the day has arrived, and you stand before your full-length mirror in your bedroom staring at yourself in your velvety purple cap and gown.

You couldn't wait to finally have this be done and over with. Thirteen full years of school finally paying off.

When you get to the arena in your town where the ceremony will be held, you're seated on the floor alphabetically and parents and family sit on the upper level, but some students sat there too since there wasn't a lot of room.

As the minutes pass by, chairs fill up, and you keep your eyes peeled for Shawn. He was nowhere to be found.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Someone says from the stage, and you press your fingers to your temples and lean back in the seat. Pulling out your phone, you type,

Where the hell are you?

When he doesn't respond, you decide that he's probably already here, and you just haven't seen him yet, and his phone is most likely turned off for the ceremony. It could be anything, and you shouldn't jump to conclusions so easily.

Halfway in, your phone buzzes.

S.O.S.

From Shawn.

You scrunch your eyebrows, waiting for furthermore explanation. It buzzes again in your lap and almost drops, but you catch it just in time.

I'm on 71st st and my car flipped.

With that, you jump up, nonchalantly shuffling out of your row and racing across the arena floor. Pretty much all eyes were on you, but you didn't care.

Your feet patter one after the other on the pavement of the parking lot as you search for your car, and upon locating it, you jump in and pull out, driving speedily down the street.

Your mind races with thoughts of Shawn, and if he was okay. Obviously he was well enough to text, but apparently not well enough to dial 911? Does he even need an ambulance?

You wonder if you should call for one now or if you should see how bad things are first. You eventually go with the latter.

As soon as you arrive, you see his black pick-up truck laying on its side right beside the road, and even though there were very few cars driving on this road, no one was stopping to help him.

After dialing 911, you park your car on the opposite side of the road, rip off your cap, and race across while holding up your gown so you don't trip.

"Shawn?" You yell as soon as you get close enough.

"Shawn!"

"Y/N, go to the other side!" You hear faintly. You rush around the car and you're immediately greeted by the bottom of it, which was facing you.

The passenger door, even though it was a good two or three feet above your head, was open.

You go around to the back and pull yourself up, walking on the side until you reach the door. You swing halfway inside and see Shawn laying against the driver's side door, his head pressed to the window, which was broken.

"Oh my god," You manage as you grab his hand, struggling to pull him up. He reaches for the handle on the ceiling, and then he was practically hanging there until he was able to get completely out of the wreckage.

You hear sirens, but you just wrap your arms around his waist and usher him out of the way from the car and over to the grass. You help him lay down, resting his head on your lap.

"Y/N," He croaks, but you press your finger to his lips.

"Shh, don't talk, baby," You order, placing your palm on his forehead and running your thumb in circles through his hair.

"I'm s-sorry that I m-missed your graduat-tion."

"Shawn," You laugh quietly, "It's okay. It's okay."

He shuts his eyes and you continue to stroke his hair before the ambulance pulls up, and they lift his body on a stretcher and wheel him over towards the doors in a record time.

You climb in after them, helping one of the paramedics shut the doors before they walk around and climb in the front. You sit down beside him, not used to the small amount of space.

He grabs your hand and tightly squeezes it, and you were sure he could feel you shaking.

"Is he going to be okay?" You ask the paramedic.

"I'm fine," Shawn interrupts.

"I have no idea, but he looks fine. Probably just a minor head injury and a few cuts and bruises. Sir, how did you manage to flip your car?" He looks down at Shawn.

"Well I dropped the rubber band that was holding the flowers I got Y/N here for her graduation ceremony together and I leaned down to get it and when I got back up I saw I was like two inches away from a telephone pole and I swerved so I wouldn't hit it and then I was thrown to the side and my head hit the window."

He says it all in one breath, and he was talking so normally you begin to believe he was right about being fine.

"You got me flowers?" You beam.

"Of course, darling," He turns and looks up at you.

His eyes meet yours and you could see that his lip was split open, and there was an angry red scar right above his right eyebrow.

You were so close to him, your elbows were resting on the stretcher, so you go ahead and play with his hair again.

"I like it when you do that," He says. "It feels nice."

You laugh. "Well then I'll continue to do it."

"Okay."

"Shawn?" You say quietly.

He raises his eyebrows. "Yes?"

"I thought I might lose you today."

He presses his lips together and reaches up to rub your temple.

"I didn't mean to scare you, Y/N. I love you."

"I love you too."
