"Amira?" you say quietly, knocking on your five year old daughter's bedroom door. Her birthday was last week, so she had lots of new toys to play with. She's been up in her room all day.

"What?" she answers, not looking up from where she sat on the carpet, making a zebra and a Barbie doll make out with each other.

"Can we talk for a little while? As soon as your Dad gets home we have a big surprise for you. But before he comes, I think we should have a little woman-to-woman chat," you explain, sitting down on her full sized bed with the pink flowery duvet.

She looks up, setting down her toys for a moment. "Woman-to-woman?"

You knew you had her attention. She liked being called a woman, or anything that insisted she was more grown up than she actually was.

"Come sit by me," you pat the spot on the bed next to you, which she agrees to. She stands up and crosses the room, sitting criss-cross beside you. She widens her eyes, ready to listen.

"Amira," you start, "Have you made any new friends in kindergarten class?"

She thinks for a moment. "Yes I have," she nods. "Mrs. Arnell said that she is my friend."

You smile. "But Amira, Mrs. Arnell is your teacher. Have you made any friends with the other kids?"

She shakes her head. "We have nothing in common."

"What are you talking about?"

"They all have big brothers and big sisters, or little baby brothers or sisters. But I don't. So I can't be friends with them," she struggles to cross her arms over her chest, furrowing her eyebrows. "But Mrs. Arnell doesn't have any brothers or sisters either. So that's why we are friends."

You cup her chin and force her to look up at you, peering into her chocolate brown eyes that looked exactly like Shawn's.

"So Amira, are you saying you can't be friends with any of the kids your age because you don't have a brother or sister?"

She nods matter-of-factly.

"Sweetheart," you laugh. "That's no reason not to be friends with someone. And I'm sure you'll find someone who doesn't have any brothers or sisters. It's not a bad thing, you know."

"But I tried being friends with everyone in the whole entire class," she exaggerates. "But it's okay. I don't want to make friends. I like being by myself or with Mrs. Arnell or you and Dad."

"Well you know, Amira, you play dress up by yourself an awful lot. You play barbies alone, and have tea parties with your dolls--"

"Dad joins my tea parties!" she exclaims. "He's never missed one!"

"--And I think you would enjoy having a little brother or sister around. Don't you think?"

"No," she sticks out her bottom lip. "I like it by myself."

"Amira, think about this," you grab her hand, rubbing circles around her thumb. "You would get to teach your baby sister how to have a tea party. Or, you would get to talk to your little brother about how to treat a girl... a big sister is an important role."

"That does sound really fun," she smiles a little. "But I'm not a big sister."

Just then, your husband, Shawn, knocks on the bedroom door.

"Hello?" He cracks it open.

"Dad!" Amira jumps up from the bed, running to greet him like she always does when he returns home from work.

He scoops her up and peppers her face with little kisses, before dropping her back to the ground and looking over at you.

"Hello sweet girl," he smiles brightly, sitting down next to you on the bed. "Did you two get to talk?"

"Yes!" Amira answers for you, running up and sitting in between you. "Momma told me that it's important to be a big sister!"

"Oh she did?" Shawn raises an eyebrow, eyeing your stomach. "Well then, are you ready for your surprise?"

She stands back up and jumps up and down in front of you, her energy making you laugh. "Yes! Yes! What is it? Did I get a pony?"

"Nope, not a pony," Shawn chuckles, sliding his arm around your waist and scooting closer to you. He kisses your forehead quickly before turning back to your zealous daughter, who was still jumping up and down.

"Amira," you grin. "You're going to be a big sister."

She stops jumping.

She looks from you to Shawn.

"What?" she seems confused.

Shawn swoops in. "Mom is pregnant, Amira. We're gonna have a new family member."

She looks surprised, but obviously doesn't truly process it. She just smiles again and says, "is it a boy or a girl?"

You shrug. "We don't know yet, baby. But we'll find out soon. Are you excited?"

"Yes!" she screams, her energy going from 0-100. "I'll get to teach her how to have a tea party!"

"Or him!" Shawn yells back.

She runs up and hugs you both, then looks at you and says quietly, "Momma?"

"Yes, Amira?" you respond.

"Where is the baby?"

"The baby is inside Momma's tummy," Shawn answers, sitting her up on his lap.

She looks up at him. "Why?"

"Because that's where the baby is going to grow."

"But how did the baby get in there?" she looks confused.

Shawn looks at you and smirks. "I just love your Momma very, very much."
