annabeth must've noticed my sour expression, because she stopped her third revision of the ship. "cherry, are you okay?"

"definitely not." i replied, looking out the window at the blank white flag that flew from the mast.

"i'm really sorry, cher."

"it wasn't your fault."

annabeth nodded her head, and then awkwardly shifted away.

i'd met everybody on the ship, and tried my best to keep polite.

my discomfort probably showed on my face, though, because the ship was too tense to speak.

a boy named leo was going over the plan and all its backup plans with annabeth.

she pulled aside their war-crazed chaperone, coach gleeson hedge, and encouraged him to take the morning off in his cabin and watch reruns of mixed martial arts
championships.

the last thing anybody needed as they flew a magical greek trireme into a potentially hostile roman camp was a middle-aged satyr in gym clothes waving a club and yelling "die!"

everything seemed to be in order.

the warship descended through the clouds, and i started thinking the worst. what if percy still didn't remember me?
