Narrator: Last time, our heroes arrived at the venue and got their numbers. They found their assigned tag-partners quite fast with Ash pairing up with a young, rookie trainer from Jotho, Serena and Dawn and surprisingly, Brock and his old partner Holly.
As the first competitors made their way to the field, Ash took Joey apart into one of the changing rooms for a brief talk.
"If we wanna win this, we gotta work together alright?" Ash started, trying to help the rookie to the best of his abilities.
Joey nodded determinedly, carefully listening to Ash, who had a lot more experience.
"Is Rattata your only pokemon?" Ash asked curiously.
Joey shook his head. "I've also got a Cyndaquil." He took out another pokemon and revealed the fire type.
"Cyndaquil!" It exclaimed up on being released. Cyndaquil immediately jumped at Joey, causing the boy to laugh as the fire type hugged it's trainer.
Ash smiled at the sight and remembered his own. Cyndaquil was quite hard to work with but they got it down and eventually, it became Typhlosion, one of his stronger pokemon.
But remembering all the troubles they had, Ash asked; "How does it do with getting it's flame on? Does it have trouble doing so?"
"Huh?" Joey looked up surprised. "How do you know?"
Ash simply smiled. "I raised one myself. It was a massive pain to get it to ignite in an instant but we pulled it off. Just make sure to warm it up as quickly as possible and you'll be good."
"Thanks for the advice!" Joey exclaimed happily and excitedly.
At that moment, the door opened. "Ahh! There you are!" Serena shouted, her smile growing large as she came through with Dawn, Brock and Holly in tow.
"Hey guys!" Ash stood up, smiling at his friends while taking Serena's hands in his before giving her a quick kiss. Joey blushed a little and felt flustered at the sight of that kiss.
"We couldn't find you anywhere." Serena remarked after parting from the kiss.
Ash smiled. "I was just here helping Joey out."
Serena looked at the little boy and smiled politely. "Hi there, nice to meet you!"
"T-thanks..." Joey said, getting nervous.
"He's a little shy." Ash jumped in, causing Serena's smile to grow even larger. "No need to feel shy around me." She said in a sweet voice.
"I-It's not that..." Joey said. "I-It's just because I recognise you from TV. You won the contest yesterday."
