--Madi and the Dawsons

“But Dad!” Kali shrieked.

“No Kali,” he insisted.

“Mom please talk some sense into him!” She begged turning towards me. Adam sat on my lap, toying with my necklace. He had my black hair, but it was straight like Jace’s. His eyes were my blue with flecks of Jace’s brown. He was such a beautiful little boy. He looked up at me, seeing if I would defend Kali or side with Jace.

“Kali I agree with him,” I said. She stomped her foot and made some choking growling sound. “You’re to young to stay at your boyfriend’s.”

“MOM! You spent like two WEEKS with Dad when you were sixteen! It’s ONE night. ONE night!” She begged.

“There’s a big difference between then and now Kali.” I said.

“What difference?” She shrieked.

“Number one, we were kidnapped my parents would never EVER had let me do that. Number two his parents won’t be home and I’m not letting my daughter go and get herself pregnant!”

“Mom, give me some credit! I’m not that stupid!” She said. Kendal snorted from the couch.

“Yes she is,” Jack said. Kendal high fived him and they went back to playing the X box. Jack’s curls had straightened out and he’d grown to be very handsome. Thankfully he hadn’t inherited Andrew’s player attitude. He had a steady girlfriend. This summer he’d come back from college to work with Jace at the police station. I couldn’t believe he was twenty.

Kendal sat intently watching the screen. He was an exact copy of Jace at sixteen. Kali, much to Jace’s dismay, had lost her blonde hair. Her curls now fell in waves of black ink.

“Jack, shut up. Maybe I should tell them about Christina, Kendal.” Kali threatened.

“Who’s Christina?” Jack asked.

“Head cheerleader,” Kendal shrugged. Jack high fived him again.

“Will you please all discuss this some other time?” I begged.

“It’s not our fault we’re like this. It’s inherited.” Jack said. I shot a glance at him.

“The ghosts,” He said, laughing. I flushed beat red.

“Quit torturing your mother,” Jace ordered, laughing a little.

“So I can go?” Kali asked.

“No!” Everyone shouted.

“No,” Adam repeated. He clapped his little three year old hands and laughed.

Kali’s POV

I swung my legs carefully over the bed. I grabbed the bag beside my bed and carefully crept out into the hall. Kendal’s door was open. His arm hung limply off the bed. I snuck past. Adam’s room was upstairs so I didn’t have to worry about him. I made my way outside to the door. I was about to open it when I heard a cluck of a tongue behind me.

“You’re going to have to try harder than that Kali,” Jack said. I turned in defeat, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Are you going to tell them?” I asked.

“Are you going to leave?” He countered.

“Yes,” I said.

“Then yes,” He answered.
