You were "part of HYDRA", they told you. You didn't know what HYDRA was, you just knew what HYDRA did. Kill people. Make order, instigate change throughout the world. HYDRA made the plans in the shadows. And they did so with assassins like the Winter soldier. You were just another assassin like the Winter Soldier. If the Winter Soldier was compromised, you were HYDRA's most likely backup plan. Sure, you didn't have any metal limbs, but you had enhanced senses, and enhanced speed, and strength. Maybe you weren't as fast as Pietro, or as strong as the Hulk, but you could easily hold your own.

When you were given the orders one day to assassinate the Winter Soldier, you accepted them easily. Sure, your mind was tangled after being awoken from the cryo, but you were thinking straight. You knew the mission. Kill. Restore order. Instigate change. You simply nodded and slipped into your black leather jumpsuit. A female mirror-image of the Winter Soldier.

Your boss walked up to you. "Agent (L/N). I expect you to finish the job. Don't fail me like the Winter Soldier did."

"Who's (L/N)?" You asked, the name sparking a distant memory in the back of your mind. But you didn't pursue it. Past memories were a weakness that HYDRA always aimed to destroy. It was why they wiped your memories every year or so.

The agent didn't say anything in response, probably worried that he would slip up again. You had a mission to fulfill. Spy on Bucky Barnes, the former Winter Soldier. Kill him and any witnesses. Done. Easy. Peace restored.

One day, he was alone with only Steve Rogers, and Sam Wilson. Steve, you were told, was a super soldier, like you and Bucky, and was also holding the mantle of Captain America. The other, Sam AKA Falcon, a flying soldier who was considered not a threat, as he didn't seem to have his wings with him.

They were walking down the sidewalk, joking between themselves, enjoying the simple life that came only under the umbrella of their measly hat-and-sunglass disguises. You stepped out of the black van onto the road, a trench coat concealing your jumpsuit and equipment, and your heels clicking against the black pavement.

"Distract the others." You harshly ordered your team, who nodded and filed out, guns in hand, immediately causing chaos and fear amongst the pedestrians who took note of the guns in hand. You took a grenade launcher out of the car and shot it at an incoming truck, which exploded and tumbled over you.

Someone screamed behind you. You didn't care enough to look back.

The trio turned around in shock, to see you standing in the middle of the road. You vaguely heard one of them, the captain, exclaim "another one?!", before jumping into action. By now, you had discarded your trench coat, and currently had on your black jumpsuit, a bright red HYDRA logo on the fabric covering your right collarbone.

Bucky's posture stiffened when he saw you, and immediately ran forward. Steve and Sam were separated, as one went to call for backup and the other went to protect the civilians.

Bucky ran towards you and was about to punch you until you ducked and swung a knife around. He grabbed your arm, twisting the knife out of your hand. You growled and spun around, kicking him in the face, landing a solid punch to his jaw.

As you were about to punch him again, he grabbed your incoming fist and twisted it behind you, forcing you to the ground.

He tore off your goggles and mask, exposing your face to the world. Shit. Another problem to fix.

Bucky tore away from you immediately, staggering back like he had been shot in the chest. "(Y/N)?" He asked incredulously.

You struggled against his grip. "I am the Winter Soldier."

"Bucky!" You heard Steve call.

Bucky looked up, and his grip loosened a bit, so you took the opportunity to kick him off, and disappear.

Steve ran up to Bucky. "Who was that?"

Bucky shook his head and looked down at his hands, the metal of his vibranium arm glinting in the sun. His only souvenir from his life in HYDRA.

Of course, besides the haunting memory of his only friendly companion.

"I knew her."
