Dad and I didn't speak; Ruby and Ev drove away and so did we. Neither of us said another word about Athena. "How do I know you were faithful to my Mom, Dad?" I blurt.
If Dad had the balls to cheat on Ruby, who says he didn't cheat on Mom? "I didn't, fils." Dad spoke softly.
"How can you guarantee me that?" I challenge. It may be the entire conversation we had with Ev and her mom back at the cemetery but something in me doesn't think Dad is telling me the truth.
"Because I didn't care for your mother, fils! I never did!" Dad fires back at me, "I married your mother because she gave me a beautiful gift, she gave me you! I tried to make it work with her but she always thought I had someone on the side. She didn't understand reasoning! She was.. She was paranoid with jealousy!"
"You're saying she was crazy?" I say, baffled. "Mom was not crazy, Dad. If anything, you are." I climb up to my bedroom without anther word to Dad.
Once I'm alone, I take Moms photo out. "You're not crazy; he is. He's a tricheur."
