"What happened is rare. The tear was barely there, some women just lose that amount of blood in delivery. It was impossible for my doctors to notice that something was wrong! We are very sorry for what happene-"
"They did notice. I heard a nurse saying I was losing too much blood but they said it was normal. They could have at least checked it out."
"Again, we are very sorry. The surgery won't have any cost-"
"Oh we know it won't. I'm suing the whole hospital." David said.
A light tear in the wall of her uterus, that because it went unnoticed, became a uterine rupture.
After her painful awakening at 5am in that morning, they brought her into surgery with the possibility of a hysterectomy - in case the rupture couldn't be repaired - which meant the complete removal of her uterus.
Fortunately (or not), the surgery went exactly has planned and her uterus was repaired in 3 hours.
David accompanied her through the whole morning, preferring not to call Mary Margaret or Killian because it was dawn and it would be useless for them to be here now. Instead, he spent the hours with his new grandson Henry in his arms, feeding him with the bottles of milk she had filled the previous night and waiting for Emma in the waiting room.
It was when they brought her back, telling that everything was okay now and that she should rest for a bit that he decided to call Mary Margaret and then Killian to tell what had happened.
Mary Margaret was on her way to the school but she begged him to call her if anything happened and Killian, who had just come home from his shift and managed one hour of sleep said he was on his way.
An hour after the surgery, Emma woke up from her nap to find her father talking to - more like yelling at - the doctor for his incompetence.
She really didn't care nor wanted to go through all the headache of suing so she just listened to them, speaking when she just couldn't hold back."Sir... Uterine Ruptures are more usual in c-sections. Which isn't Ms. Nolan's case. Women bleed even after delivery. It was almost impossible to recognize that something was wrong."
She saw David's mouth opening, an answer ready to come out so she just called him and gave him a look to just give up. It was not worth it.
"I'm still suing this hospital, Emma."
She sighed and in that moment Killian was at the door, his hair a mess and his face pale like he had just woke up. Well, it was 9 am and since he worked in the night, he surely had just woke up.
"You okay?" he asked breathless like he had been running.
She nodded, ignoring the concern obvious on his face and looking at David instead.
"How the hell did this happen?"
"They said it tends to happen during labor because a scar is most likely to give way under the stress of contractions. It was just... my case was very rare because I never had a c-section or a surgery that left a scar." She shrugged. "They say it could have been my placenta that was too sticky into the uterine wall-"
"A sticky placenta?" he said while sitting down on the chair next to her and Henry, chuckling at that, making her smile for the first time that day.
"I don't know the terms okay?" she rolled her eyes. "It could have been an overly distended uterus or contractions that were too frequent or forceful - which isn't the case."
"I bet on the sticky placenta." he teased her again and then he held her hand. The sudden warmth on her palm and the shocks it gave her for feeling him again after so many years invading her. "Were you in pain?"
"Ah yeah... but I thought it was normal. I took painkillers and it made it better. Until I woke up with chest pain from internal bleeding."
She noticed him clutching his teeth, his eyes semi-open from exhaustion almost burning a hole on her head from too much concern.
"But everything's okay, now, right? With the surgery? They fixed it."
"They told me that a second pregnancy would be more troubled, and that it'd have to be super visioned and with professional help, but it's not like I have to worry about that."
"Don't say that. You're only 23."
That makes her remember before he left, what he had told her.
"One day, you'll meet a guy who'll realize how lucky he is-"
"No."
"-and he'll love you and care for you more than I ever could-"
"No."
"-and you'll be so happy, Emma. You'll live your happily ever after, just like every fairy tale you've read."
"No, I don't want that. I want you." She sobbed.
"A 23-year-old with a newborn." She says and pulls away her hand from his, afraid that he'd notice the goosebumps forming at the memory. When she notices his sad expression, she does what she does best: pretend it's okay. "But it's not like I want to... after... well, everything." She looks way from her hands and watches David still talking with the doctor at the doorway, until he stops.
"I'm going to sign some papers." David tells her, before kissing her forehead and leaving the room.
She sighs, not certain if she's glad he's suing the poor doctors.
"You can go home. I'm fine now."
"I will. Just..." he sighed, his hands rubbing his eyes as he leaned against the chair. "David and I will be bringing your things to my house, so in a week, when you can leave the hospital, everything will be ready. The house was completely unfurnished when I got here. I already bought the essentials, I'm taking care of the rest little by little... but ah... I was thinking it'd be best to create the nursery in Liam's room because it's smaller so you could get my father's bedroom. We'll paint walls and everything, you don't have to worry about it-"
"I don't want to give so much trouble... One bedroom is great for us."
"No, I... Swan, I have the two other rooms free. The lad deserves one of his own. We have time. Just... at the beginning this might not look like it's working but I don't want you to give up because I know we'll be able to settle down just fine and everything will work with time-"
"I know." She had never seen him talk so fast. Killian wasn't the nervous type, at least not the old Killian. "Thank you."
"And the money-"
"I will pay everything."
He then realized he didn't know where she worked. He didn't know a lot about her.
It was like first-meeting her all over again."I'm available to help." he said and touched her arm for a second in some kind of goodbye. "I'm gonna head home, anything call me." he caressed Henry's almost hairless head and left.
