CHAPTER 58

The night sky was caliginous; the low-hanging clouds were dark-hued and there was a scent of rain in the somewhat-foggy air. The streets were desolate with cheerless window panes and tall, uninviting houses. Similar SUV vehicles were stationary outside pumps at a gas station with a yellow neon-lit sign outside a store with narrow aisles. A nineteen-year old with locks of slate-black hair and a boyish grin stood, animatedly talking with wild hand gestures and a limp cigarette in the corner of his mouth. His newly pierced nostril ring glinted under the dim lights and he touched it frequently, not yet used to the piece of silver. "...And then Glenn says to Maggie, 'I will find you', but he doesn't because spoiler alert: he dies tragically–!"

My expression turned sour. "You're a piece of shit, Irvin."

"I said, spoiler alert," he defended himself with a mischievous grin, ducking from Cole's swipe at his ear. He said to the irritated man. "This is why you should make TV marathon dates with me rather than Shay. She takes a lifetime to finish one episode and I'll even spoon you afterwards." He winked. "I charge hourly. Fifty smackers, but for an added twenty I'll pop your anal virginity with my–"

James whacked him across the ear. "You're as irksome as a pesky fly. Shut up, boy."

Irvin rubbed the side of his face with a twisted expression, grumbling. "Your hands are like sledgehammers. I'm going to sue you if you ruin my pretty face."

"You're as pretty as Mona Lisa," I said. "You hideous, malformed freak of nature."

He threw me a surprised look. "Wow. Thanks."

Cole snorted, pulling me into his side, arm around my shoulder. "This is why I love you, Shay."

I elbowed him in the gut, standing by Irvin's side. "I'm kidding, Irvin. You're as priceless as Mona Lisa and as pretty as a row of uncut diamonds." I smiled pleasantly.

He didn't return the smile and he leaned away from me slightly. "You're an ass licker. Careful, Cole, look away and you'll find Shay on her knees in front of me – ow! I was kidding, it was a goddamn joke!" Irvin moved some distance away, grousing to himself about how abusive we were and how no-one could take a joke as well as they could take a dick in their mouth.

"Idiot." James was unamused by Irvin's antics. He placed the pump back onto the stand and closed the gas tank opening. Cole mirrored his movements. He addressed Cole as the three of us walked the small distance to the gas station leaving Irvin to sit in the SUV. "I'm going to split and leave you with Irvin. I need to see the ex and my boy. It's my weekend with him."

"Alright. I'll come by sometime tomorrow and give Cain his late birthday presents." Cole took out his wallet as we entered the store, the bell tinkled above us delicately. He grabbed a case of sodas and dropped it into the basket I was carrying.
