Sitting patiently by the fire, you listened to the crackle of the wood as it was devoured by flames. You were tasked with making the company's dinner that night but, in all honesty, you had no idea what you were doing. For months you had escaped cook's duty, always finding something else to do. But that night Bombur was washing some clothes down in the river, and so it fell to you to prepare a decent meal. Sure, you knew how to cook yourself something small, quick and easy. Cooking for yourself as well as thirteen others, well... That was completely different. Staring at the flames sternly, you told yourself you would make it work. Gathering the vegetables and that day's catch in your hand, you planted yourself down in a corner and began peeling. If there ever were a task more arduous than peeling carrots, may you never be faced with it. You caught Bofur glancing over at you while you worked. He did that a lot round camp. The others said it was because he had taken a fancy to you, but you didn't believe that. How could he? He was so funny and full of stories, and you were just... Boring. Letting your mind wander, you took your eyes off of the knife in your hand. In your daze, you didn't realise the knife was inching slowly closer to your fingers. Closer... And closer... And closer... And "Ouch!" You gasped. The blade bit into your skin and you dropped everything in your hands. You held your thumb and bit your lip, bracing against the pain. Many heads turned in your direction, and a few of the other dwarves came over to you, including Bofur. Concerned, you took your hand and inspected it. Frowning, he nodded "Yep, boys I'm afraid what we've got here is a grade-A gorach." He tutted. You giggled and the others chuckled; Bofur could be so ridiculous but you still found yourself drawn to him- even when he called you an idiot. He patted your shoulder "Really though, you alright lass?" You smiled at him convincingly and nodded "I'm fine, thank you." He offered you a cloth to clean the blood and you took it gratefully. Looking back at your half finished pile of vegetables, you sighed knowing you had to carry on. Bofur noted your contempt for the task and waited for you to sit before deciding to join you on the ground. Curiously, you watched him scoot closer to you. Smiling at your perplexed expression, he said "You looked like you could use a bit of help." Then he winked at you and slid a knife out of its sheath, beginning to peel some of the vegetables for you.
Bofur had a strange way of showing kindness, like insulting you and then helping you, but you knew it was just in his nature. Time passed much quicker than before, all because you had Bofur as company while you worked. He told you one or two of his many stories and made you laugh until your sides hurt. Kili and Fili came to join you at one point but left rather quickly. Dwalin passed through as well, but didn't stop to chat. Soon enough you were done with the vegetables and so you both carried them over to the pot of water which hung above the fire. Facing Bofur, you thanked him and started to walk away when he caught your wrist with his hand. Gently, he pulled you back to him and whispered "Lass, I... I was hoping... I was wondering if you'd like to... Can we have a moment to talk? Alone." You noticed the seriousness in Bofur's bright eyes. "Yes, of course. Is everything okay?" You inquired, an expression of worry forming on your face. "Yes, yes. But there's something I really want to ask you." You understood but then asked "Well can you tell me what it's about at least?" He began to get nervous again but managed to stutter out "Later, I'll talk to you later." And he suddenly hurried back to the rest of the company, leaving you rather befuddled.
Carrying round several plates and bowls of food, you offered some to everyone in the camp. Collecting around the fire, you all shared a song or two, and enjoyed the pleasant meal you made. Almost every plate was clear. Just one seemed unusually full, and it was Bofur's. What was with him tonight? The nervousness, the secrecy, and now not eating? Something was wrong. You were tidying the plates away when you heard someone cough behind you. Standing, you spun around to see Bofur with goofy smile plastered on his face. His hands were hidden behind his back, but then he revealed a bouquet of flowers and handed them to you. You blushed, flattered and confused. Bofur took your hand in his and led you away from the group, who were staring intently. "Bofur, what's this all about?" You arched an eyebrow at him, a smirk dancing on your lips. When he was satisfied with the distance between you and the company, he let go of your hand and took a deep breath. "Y/N. If it weren't for this quest, I doubt I would have ever met you, and that would have been a crying shame because now, I won't ever forget you. I may put up this show about being confident ,and cocky, and always having a joke up my sleeve but really I just want to get to know you better and I want you to know me. The real me. So... Hi, I'm Bofur. I don't really belong anywhere, I have a strange sentimental connection to my hat, and I was really hoping you'd allow me the honour of courting you." He beamed at you. Your eyes narrowed as you tried to comprehend what he had said. You didn't reply for a few minutes and Bofur became worried "Y/N? Are you alright lass?" You snapped out of your daze "What? Yes, I'm okay." You blinked rapidly. Your chest heaved and you felt light-headed. "You must take me for a fool." You sighed, a half-hearted laugh falling from your lips. He looked taken aback "What Y/N?" You shook your head "You said you wanted me to know the real you, but did it not occur to you that he's the one I fell in love with? Of course I saw passed all the jokes and the jibes, I've known the real you all along. But I see now, you couldn't tell how I treated you differently to the others." You pursed your lips. "Y/N... You fell in love with me?" He echoed, his mouth agape. "Yes, is it any surprise? You have been my closest friend since I left the Blue Mountains." You shrugged. "Well, I love you too." He grinned happily. Cheers and whistles came from the other dwarves making you jump- you didn't know they were listening. You laughed along with Bofur, then he slid his arms around your waist and planted a kiss on your cheek. "You know Y/N, you're not much of a cook, but this is still the best dinner I've had in a long time." He teased.
It's a good thing you would never tire of his jokes.
Okay I know this one's really short but I thought I'd put it up anyway 'cos I love Bofur. So, just out of curiosity, do you guys prefer it when you have a bit of context for your part (y'know- where you came from/why you're there now), just some background stuff, or do you not mind so much when I just go straight into the story. I'm going to keep doing a bit with context and a bit without but let me know in the comments what you would rather read. As always, don't forget to vote/add to your reading lists (it helps me out a lot) and I hope you enjoyed <3
