Shivers racked your body as you gathered your cloak around you. The endless pour of rain from above had dampened your clothes and your spirits. As if travelling for days at a time wasn't tiring enough, now you were constantly shaking from the cold which exhausted you. The company were solemn as they trudged through the muddy fields. Thorin determinedly marched ahead, leading you all along a slippery path in the meadows. Beside you, Kili huffed and grit his teeth against the icy wind. Feeling sympathetic, you reached out your hand and brushed it against his before interlocking your fingers. His hand must have been numb, because it took him a moment to realise. When he finally felt it, he gently squeezed your hand and turned to admire your face.

The quest so far had been long and perilous; orcs hunted you like hounds after rabbit. Kili often came to you for comfort on the journey, for peace and love. Sometimes, the others were too much for him, and for you. So you depended on each other. You talked about home, and the future. It hadn't taken you long to completely fall for the young dwarf. After a particularly close call down in Goblin Town, he told you that he loved you and was prepared to do anything to save you. Needless to say, you felt the same. You were the happiest you had been in years. Kili made you feel safe and content. With him right there, next to you, you were ready to take on life.

Noticing how cold you were, Kili frowned and pulled you closer to him, slowly rubbing his hand up and down your arms to create some heat. You were about to thank him when a faintness swept through your body and you lost your balance. Thankfully you didn't hit the floor, as Kili was quick to catch you. Concern etched into his features, distorting his usually relaxed smile. Showing him you were alright, you flashed a small grin and nodded slightly.

Trekking over the expanse of dullish green, blanketed by a sky of silky grey, the group lost all motive and morale. With each passing hour, you grew colder and weaker. Suddenly, your breath became short and sharp, snatching very little air. Kili halted the rest of the group with a roar of panic. You froze on the spot, squeezing your eyes shut. You tried to take deeper breaths but it didn't work! Kili placed a hand on your back and said your name but you couldn't respond. Something was caught in your throat. Time ticked on for many seconds and the eyes of every dwarf were fixated on you. Taking one last gasp, you felt something arise, pressure stinging... Then you let out a feeble "Achoo!" The surprise of the sneeze knocked you back a few steps and you giggled with embarrassment. Fili scoffed at his brother who looked at you with incredulous eyes. The older dwarves grumbled angrily at you for wasting their time and then resumed walking. You smiled apologetically at Kili who laughed and pulled you closer to his side, pressing a kiss to your temple. "You're getting sick, aren't you?" He raised one eyebrow teasingly. You shook your head indignantly "I'm fine. Look." Your stepped away and did a little turn, then returned to him. He spoke quietly, his voice deep and husky "We can stop if you'd like." Staring at the group ahead, you considered taking him up on the offer, but the dwarves wouldn't be happy. The trip was long enough as it is, you didn't need distractions, so you decided against it. "I'm not sick! Now hurry up, or we'll lose them." You scurried further ahead to walk with Bofur and Ori. Kili smiled to himself, biting his lip. At that moment, he felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have you.

As you crept along the trail, listening to Bofur's stories, you thought you had another sneeze coming. A dull ache filled your head and the blood drained from your face. It was an awful feeling, sickening to say the least. The air seemed to get hotter, much hotter. Pressing a ghostly white hand to your cheek, you felt as though you were on fire. Maybe Kili was right. No, you wouldn't worry them. It was probably going to pass. You hoped...

You had travelled for nearly three hours and the aching feeling had become a relentless thudding in your skull. Kili re-joined you and obviously took note of your complexion. Fearing for your health, Kili approached Thorin "Uncle, may I ask, where is the nearest town?" He eyed Kili suspiciously "About three miles east. Why?" Kili replied quietly "Y/N needs to rest." Thorin was about to argue but Kili interrupted him. "I know it's not practical but she's fallen ill. She's doing her best, though it will only get worse. It's not just her, look at everyone- they're on the brink of insanity. Let them rest." Thoughtfully, Thorin stared off into the east, where the horizon darkened with the end of day "Very well. It will not take long if we keep our pace. Take some bags from the pony, let Y/N ride. Make sure she stays well." Gratefully, Kili smiled and hurried to you. During their conversation, you had slowed, too exhausted to keep up. Ordering Dwalin to remove some rucksacks from a pony, Kili placed an arm around your waist supporting you. He helped you mount the horse and remained by your side in case you lost your balance. Your nose stung and your ears were ringing, and you were relieved when you feet did not have to bear the burden of your own weight anymore.

The next branch of the journey was a blur, almost as if it never existed. You remember faint voices, brief contact, rolling fields and sky which was replaced with dark, looming buildings and empty, cobblestone streets. Lamps cast rays of melancholic gold across the floor as you entered a small lodging that sat in a secluded corner of a street. You remembered Kili assisting you off the horse and carrying you bridal-style into the building while Gloin tied the horse up and collected the bags. As the rabble of dwarves stumbled into the foyer of the inn, people cast disapproving glances their way. It didn't take long for Thorin to book a room- he wanted to keep everybody together, and soon you were being carried up a flight of stairs and into a hallway. When you all entered the room, Kili put you down, checking that you could stand on your own, before hurrying to find some blankets for everyone. The band of dwarves all smiled, pleased to finally have shelter and food. Thorin eyed you from the doorway. You looked back at him and asked "Something wrong?" He shook his head, a laugh danced on his lips "No, I just thought you might be in more of a hurry to rest." He nodded towards a bedroom. You scoffed but it resulted in you coughing violently. You recovered and croaked "I don't need to rest, I'm fine." "We know that's not true." Thorin berated you "While you sleep, we will plan for the coming days. Now, off you go." You were taken back by his tone. You were not a child, you wouldn't be treated like one. Though it was quite clear you were too ill to be of any service, you didn't want to be excluded from the group. You rebutted "No, I will stay and help you plan." Folding your arms, you planted your feet down. Thorin growled "Y/N, you can barely stand. Don't be stupid and go to bed." As weary as you were, you wanted to help, so you retorted "I'm not an infant, you can't give me a bedtime." Thorin laughed teasingly "Watch me. Go to bed and stop being so stubborn." Still you didn't budge. Balin noticed the tension and decided to step in while Kili was otherwise engaged. "Come on love," He smiled kindly "Let's get you warm and dry." He led you away, but you kept your eyes locked on Thorin. He sighed as you turned away- he wanted to take care of you, he really did. But Thorin wasn't good at showing empathy. He knew how to command soldiers, and lead them into battle, not how to put a poorly girl to bed. Kili re-emerged from another room and glanced around for you. Thorin pointed to the door Balin had taken you through and Kili immediately headed that way.

Kili was surprised to find you arguing with Balin in the doorway of a bedroom that was lit by a small candle. Balin spoke calmly "The only way you can help us Dear, is by resting and being at your strongest tomorrow." Reluctantly you nodded and muttered quietly "Stupid Thorin." Kili coughed, catching Balin's attention. Somewhat relieved, Balin excused himself and told Kili "She your responsibility now." The two of you were alone. The fever had clearly affected your ability to make decisions, because something in your brain told you that now was the perfect time to try and seduce Kili. Brilliant. Strutting towards him slowly, you ran your eyes up and down his body. A sly smile graced your lips as you placed your arms around his neck. Intrigued at your behaviour, his brow knitted together and he wrapped his arms around your waist. "I am soooo lucky, y'know?" You breathed. He laughed gently "How so?" You leaned your head on his chest and played with his hair "Well, I've got a sexy boyfriend, who loves me and takes care of me. And I'm all alone with him right now..." You moved away and gestured for him to follow you and blew him a kiss. Kili rolled his eyes but blushed slightly. He realised it was the exhaustion getting to you. He walked after you and you grinned triumphantly. Instead of kissing you though, he took your cloak off and hung it on the door, then went around you to pull back the duvet. You looked at him, pouting like a child losing her toy. "Come on, you need to sleep." He whispered lovingly. You sneered at him, tired of people saying it to you "Yooouu need to sleep." When he approached you, he placed the back of his hand on your forehead and frowned at you. "Stop messing around." He told you. "I'm not tired." You lied. "That's a lie, obviously." He replied. Kili, himself, was tired and didn't want to play anymore games. Wasting no time, he glided over to you and lifted you from the floor. He carried you back to the bed, laying you down carefully. Pulling the cover over you, he walked to the doorway. "You have to try to rest or you-" Hearing an almost inaudible snoring sound, he turned back to look at you. As soon as your head touched the silky, soft pillow you were dragged under by exhaustion. Now sound asleep, you curled up under the duvet and breathed slowly. You looked so peaceful, it made Kili's heart skip a beat. Blowing out the candle on the shelf, he traipsed back over to the bed, and climbed in the other side, careful not to wake you. "Goodnight beautiful." Kili hummed and then finally allowed himself to rest.
