* In this one the dwarves don't get arrested by the elves in Mirkwood :)*

Taking your time was a rule of yours- a guideline for your life. Why rush? You had all the time in the world. Literally. Throughout your life, you had come to believe that you can only appreciate a painting when you pause to notice its flaws; a wrong stroke, mismatched colour, or odd scratch which would usually remain unseen by many. Because those imperfections reminded you that somebody, somewhere had put an awful lot of time into it, in spite of those mistakes. So why should mistakes remain unseen when they make something real? Nothing, nobody is without their flaws. But if you take time, you can learn to appreciate them that much more.

You had been resting in the forest, near Thranduil's caverns, on a lazy autumn morning. Lord Elrond, your father, had sent you out to deliver news to Thranduil almost a week ago, but your Ada knew by now that when you were sent out, he should not expect to see you again for a while. But he trusted you to get the job done. You heard a chorus of yelling rip through the forest and heard the panicked thudding of feet- ten, perhaps twelve people altogether. Standing from your comfortable position by the river, you searched for the disturbance. Approaching a clearing, you saw nothing at first. Then suddenly a huge, heavy body collided with you, knocking you onto the ground, winding you. You cried out and hit the ground with a thud. The assailant was out of breath and clearly in a hurry. "Didn't see you there lass, come on!" A rugged man with a beard, and sword in hand, grabbed your wrist, lifted you up and dragged you deeper into the forest. At first you were far to confused to do anything about the man who gripped your hand tightly, but then you turned and saw a hoard of dwarves chasing after you. No, they weren't chasing you, you realised; they were running from something. Spiders of Mirkwood. You quickened your pace, overtaking the dwarf with ease. "Wait for me!" He called, which made you smile. Pushing yourself, you neared the opening on the other side of the forest. "We're almost there!" You whooped. The dwarf glared determinedly ahead when, out of nowhere, a spider leapt in front of you. Knocking you aside, the dwarf swung his sword with such force you thought he might fall over. But he struck the screeching creature's leg, causing it to lash out at him. Coming to his aid, you slipped two small, daggers out of your pocket and launched them at the beast's midnight-black face. Collapsing, the spider twitched and then stopped altogether. The dwarf grinned next to you "Nice job lass." His thick Scottish accent dominated his words. "Let's keep going, there'll be others here soon." He took your hand, gently this time and helped you hop over the spider's corpse.

As the trees became sparser, you look back into the mysterious web of leaves and branches and waited. Within a few moments, dwarves began to emerge, one by one, seemingly lost. Then they spied the dwarf next to you and happily came over to greet him. None of them took notice of you which you were partly grateful for, you could just slip away... The last to appear from the forest was not a dwarf, but a peculiar Halfling. As the dwarves congregated, you stepped back but realised the one whom you had fought alongside had placed his arm around your back. One of the dwarves spoke- you assumed it was the leader- "Is anybody hurt? Do we have everybody?" He shouted over the others. They all spoke lowly, checking everyone had made it out. "Thorin we're all fine, let's go." Another one affirmed- he also had a Scottish accent. You wondered if he and the one you knew were related. Thorin, as the other had called him, counted the group, his eyes wandering each face. "One, two, three, four... ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen.. Perfect. Let's keep going and-" He did a double take, spying you standing awkwardly next to your friend at the back. "Who are you?" Thorin stared, confused. "I found her in the forest," Your dwarf explained "She helped me kill one of the spiders." Thorin's eyes flicked between the two of you and he said "Dwalin, thank her and move on." Dwalin, your thoughts echoed. The other dwarves prepared themselves for travelling, but Dwalin turned to you and looked sadly at your eyes "Lass, I didn't even get your name." You smiled sweetly "Y/N, I'm Y/N, daughter of Lord Elrond." The dwarves froze in shock. "Lord Elrond, my goodness." Some of the dwarves bowed, but Thorin watched you with disdain in his eyes. Dwalin stuttered "What are you doing so far from home?" You then proceeded to tell the dwarves about your errand to Thranduil. "That's where we're going." A young, handsome, brown-haired dwarf chimed. Dwalin grinned "So we might as well bring you along for the journey, yes? We're headed there anyway, would be nice for a change." Dwalin challenged Thorin, who reluctantly nodded. The dwarves cheered and one by one, introduced themselves, generally by saying "___, at your service." With an added bow. Then the hobbit wandered over to you with a friendly smile "Don't worry, they did that to me the first time too." You made comfortable conversation with them all while you walked to the caverns.

*Time skip :D*

About four days later, halfway there, the sky thundered and rain pelted down from the clouds unexpectedly. The group used their jackets for cover but you had nothing as you had not planned to take so long. Feeling sorry for you, Dwalin reached into his bag and produced another coat. "Here Y/N. Use this." He assisted you in putting it on and the two laughed at its enormity in comparison to your small frame. However it was very warm and you found you didn't want to take it off.

You and the stern dwarf had bonded over those few days- from first seeing him the forest, you knew he was different. You would eat dinner together and have long, meaningful conversations way into the night, even sometimes until sunrise. Sometimes when you slept, he would hold you and you would cuddle into his strong arms. One particular night, he was clutching you close to him when he started mumbling in his sleep. You awoke and heard him whisper to his sleeping self "Y/N, I love you Y/N." You knew deep down you loved him too, but what would your Ada say if he knew you felt this way? You tried to drive the feelings away, lie to yourself, but there was no hiding it when you looked at him with that glint in your eyes. Dwalin tried to be authoritive and guarded in front of the others, and many had commented that he was different around you, more caring and open. Thorin told you he had known him his whole life and never had he seen him so content. This gave you great pride but also a strange feeling of sadness, how long would it be before you reached the caverns?

"Thank you Dwalin." You pecked his cheek. He blushed a deep red "T'was nothing lass, just doing what any gentle-dwarf would do for such a beautiful young lady." Now it was your turn to blush. Then Dwalin added "You know, you don't have to leave us at the caverns. We all like you here, why don't you come on a quest with us? We could use the help. And I'd be broken to see you go now." You were surprised at the offer and noticed some curious heads turning in your direction. One dwarf, who you learned was Ori, spied your hesitation and chirped "Your the nicest person I've met, I'd  like you to stay." Then in a crescendo, the other joined in. Kili teased "Who am I going to court if you're not here? Bombur?" Dwalin bristled at this. You knew Kili's playfulness got to him, but there was no other you'd rather spend time with than Dwalin and he knew this. Then Bofur "And you've not finished telling us all your stories!" Soon everyone was babbling about why you should stay. Their behaviour made you laugh, you could tell you would regret it if you refused. Even Thorin turned to convince you, pulling you aside and muttering "You have changed them, Y/N. Dwalin would be awfully lost without you. And the others look to you for encouragement and kindness. Do you not think it is worth sticking by us? We dwarves value loyalty above all else, it would make quite an impression." He smirked. You faced the company, and took a deep breath. Smiling, you stated

"I suppose I have time for one little adventure."
