You squinted at the icy light through your window; the winter had finally claimed the Shire with snow thinly veiling the trees and paths. The moon was crouched behind grey clouds, slightly peering out, highlighting the beautiful scenery. Two blue birds nested in the acorn tree that Bilbo had planted in the garden. Staring at it made you think of the company- the dwarves and Gandalf, you and Bilbo. When Bilbo first swept you away on that adventure, you didn't know what to think. You were scared, you were worried, but mostly you were happy to be with Bilbo. On that quest you two had only grown closer, in fact so close, he proposed to you when you returned to the Shire! Of course you said yes, you loved him dearly. All the dwarves were at the wedding, so were Lord Elrond and Legolas, and Gandalf. It was the most perfect day.
And there you were, five years later, reminiscing about it. Bilbo was sat in his armchair reading a book, when he noticed how entranced you were by the moonlight. "Y/N?" He smiled. "Yes?" You replied, not taking your eyes off the picturesque land outside, for fear of it disappearing. "Y/N, are you alright?" He frowned, slightly concerned. He placed his book aside and stood by you at the window. Bilbo traced over the landscape with his eyes, his gaze following yours. Gently, he wrapped an arm around your waist and hugged you tightly. "I'd like to talk to you, would you sit with me by the fire? Come away from the window, you'll freeze to death." You slowly led you away. You eventually tore your eyes away from outside, and you blinked at Bilbo who couldn't help but laugh at you. "Y/N, I wanted to talk to you about something... Rather important." He mumbled. You raised an eyebrow, why was he so nervous? "Of course." You placed a kiss on his cheek and the two of you sat down in the living room. The orange glow of the fire grazed over your skin, warming you. "So, I was thinking, it's almost Christmas and maybe we should invite Balin and the rest down to celebrate?" He looked at you, hopefully. You giggled, was that it? "I'd love to see them all again. We'd have to send invitations out soon though." You agreed and he nodded happily.
You could tell that Bilbo was hesitating, he wanted to say something but wouldn't, or couldn't. "There's something else?" You asked, leaning over to him. "Yes. Y/N, I love you, I always have. What if... What if we started a family?" He spoke very quietly. You stared at him in shock. "What?" You whispered. "Y/N, I want us to have a baby, so we can be a real family. I'm done with the adventures, it can be me, you and our very own child. We're ready." He smiled convincingly. Red flags went off in your head, everywhere. A child? You had no idea he wanted this before! Why so sudden? You sighed, resting your chin on your hand "Bilbo, it's not that I don't want a family but... A baby is a big deal." You frowned. "So is five years of marriage!" He retorted. "It's not the same thing." You shook your head. "Why not? Look, I love you, but there's so much more to have!" He took your hand but you pulled away from him, making his eyes widened. "Why? Is this not enough for you Bilbo Baggins? Am I really not enough for you anymore?" You felt tears cloud your vision. "No, of course you are, but we're ready." He whimpered, his heart breaking. "You are ready. I'm not. Please Bilbo, understand." A tear crept over your cheek and hit the floor with an almost inaudible tap. Standing, you walked to the door, picked up your cloak and left. That was too sudden, too much for you to handle. Bilbo was left, gobsmacked in his chair. His heart was so set on the two of you starting a family, he couldn't comprehend why you wouldn't want to...
The frozen air was still around you, no wind, no whistling. You tip-toed on the paths to the forest, feeling as though you couldn't go back to Bilbo yet. He just didn't see it- you weren't fit to be a mother- You were a killer. By all standards, he was too. Why didn't that bother him? Ever since the quest to Erebor was over, you were riddled with guilt by the lives you took, like blood staining your hands, your soul, for the rest of your life. It didn't matter in the end whether those beings were good or bad, who were you to decide to take them away from their families? Gandalf was wrong, your weren't brave, you were just desperate to save your friends. A baby needs better than that, you just weren't sure if you could do it. My goodness! You wanted a family with Bilbo so badly! But was it right to? You would love that baby with every morsel in your body. You sniffed, tears blurring your vision. The faint crunch of footsteps in the snow caught your attention. You turned to see Bilbo, hurrying after you.
"Y/N! Wait, please. I'm sorry!" He called. Bilbo was out of breath by the time he reached you but he spoke anyway "Y/N, I'm sorry. You're more than enough for me. I understand that you think it's too soon and we don't have to worry about it now. It was a silly wish." He dismissed the idea that easily, but you knew him too well. You knew he wanted nothing more. "Bilbo, it's not silly- it's normal to want a family. But the thing is, I'm not normal." Your breath shook. "What do you mean?" He stared at you. "Erebor, the battle, the killing. Do you not think about it all? I'm a murderer." You broke down, crying into his chest as he held you. "Y/N, you were a soldier, a soldier who helped to save millions of people for the cost of just a few." He calmed you. "But that's a few too many for me to deal with." You cried. "How long have you been feeling like this?" He questioned you. "Since we came back to the Shire." It was then when Bilbo began to cry, lightly but the tears were there nonetheless. "All that time and you didn't speak to me?" You shook your head. "You are the strongest person I have ever met. You are loyal, and smart. And I fell in love with you because I knew you could do anything if you really tried. I'm in love with you because I realise now, that it's not easy but you still manage to smile everyday of your life. And hey, surely the fact that you feel guilty just shows you that you are a good person really, things might not be the same if you didn't feel a little bit bad. I know I do too sometimes, when I have the nightmares. Come on, let's go home." Bilbo took your hand and started to walk, but you stayed where you were. Bilbo was such a good man, he deserved to have a family, and you could give it to him. You weren't alone in this and he was right really, at least you felt something about what you did. Things began to fall into place in your mind, you took lives but you also saved them. You made mistakes, and you learned. You lost people, but you got Bilbo in the end, and he was the one you really needed. "Bilbo, I love you. You're right, five years is a long time and we've been so happy together... Do you want a baby?" You smiled. Happiness and excitement filled his eyes as he lifted you into the air and cheered. "More than anything." He kissed you as he put you back down. The two of you walked back to your hole, knowing exactly what you were planning to do that night...
