"I hope you enjoy your gold and gems, but you will forever enjoy them alone."
That conversation had not gone to plan. In fact, it had gone far worse. Your blood boiled in your veins for you no longer knew who the man sitting on that throne was. When you came here, he was your king, your friend and your husband but now he was a monster. Shutting your eyes, you felt the tears delicately slip down you face. All you wanted to do was see Thorin, and yet, you told yourself he was the last person you wanted to see. Not only was the battle falling apart outside the castle, the dwarves were tearing themselves apart in here. On your way to the main gate, you wrestled with yourself about whether to go back and get him. Drained and broken, you sat against one of the cool, grey stone walls and wept silently.
You had not noticed the little figure creeping up beside you curiously until you heard it say "My lady? What's wrong?" It was Bilbo. Sweet, caring, brave. He bent down and offered you his and which you gratefully took. "I don't know what to do. Thorin will not fight, and I cannot." You admitted. Bilbo frowned, concern creasing his tan skin "Why not? You told Thorin you were going out there now, and that you weren't coming back." Raising an eyebrow at Bilbo, you realised the other members of the company had been eavesdropping again. You sighed "I didn't mean to say that Bilbo. The whole reason I went to speak to Thorin was because I have important news... I'm going to have a child." Bilbo's eyes widened in a contorted mix of joy and heartbreak. You continued "He can't know now, he would hate me for it." You grabbed Bilbo's shoulders and pleaded that he wouldn't tell Thorin. Bilbo nodded rapidly and you released him. You slunk back against the wall and tears began falling again. "What am I to do?" You sniffled "I don't want my baby to die." Protectively, Bilbo placed an arm around your back and spoke quietly "Your baby will not die. Not today, not tomorrow, not for a very long time. It will be safe. I promise." Comforted by Bilbo, you calmed your breathing. Bilbo looked at you seriously and then said "I need you to go and hide. Somewhere where no one will find you. If we lose, I will come back for you and we will get out of here." As kind as he was, you just wished those words were coming from Thorin's mouth and not Bilbo's. The lingering feeling of dread hung above the mountain as you wandered away from Bilbo with a heavy heart.
Soon, you stumbled upon an old cellar filled with crates and cobwebs. It was in the most secluded part of the halls and you knew anyone would struggle to find it on purpose; it was coincidence you found it in the first place. Settling down in a corner, you closed your eyes and rested. Here, you were away from the clanging of silver and blood-stained swords, and the cries of man and beast of every manner. Tugging your jacket tighter around you, you waited... and waited... Until darkness swept over you completely.
Meanwhile, Bilbo had rushed to the throne room in search of Thorin but when he arrived, the king was nowhere to be seen. In absolute panic, Bilbo bolted back to where the company awaited, only to find Thorin already there and what seemed to be... apologising. Thorin spoke to the company, showing his guilt. However, Bilbo could not stand to wait for him to finish, so he announced "Thorin. The only person you owe an apology to is your wife." Questioningly, the company watched on. Thorin shivered at the memory of the way he treated his love. He was speechless but understood Bilbo's fury. Then a thought occurred "She... She left. She's out there, alone." Horrified he ran to the balcony and stared out into the slaughter. Thorin's lip quivered in rage as he whirled around, facing the company again. The entire company were in shock. The sky which now thundered and spat down on the fields, was a black mass of swirling clouds. Ori clutched to Dori as he took in the loss of his once good friend. Fili and Kili both gazed at the ground filled with hatred. The others felt grief, disgust and heartbreak. "HOW COULD YOU LET HER LEAVE?!" Dwalin roared, grabbing Thorin by the collar "SHE LEFT BECAUSE OF YOU!!" Bifur, Gloin and Balin, as well as the twins, had to restrain him from thumping Thorin into the ground. You were like a daughter to Dwalin and a granddaughter to Balin, so the two took the news very poorly indeed. Thorin could only lower his head in shame as he whispered "I didn't mean to." His tears hit the dirt.
Bilbo coughed "Gentlemen, Y/N didn't leave. I stopped her." One grand sigh fell from the lips of each dwarf in unison. Thorin stared at Bilbo "How? Where is she?" Biting his lip, Bilbo explained "I told her to hide deep in the halls and not to come out until I find her." Balin growled "She could be anywhere, lad. What chance do we have of finding her now?!" Thorin frowned "Why on Middle Earth would you tell her to hide? She was safe as long as she was inside the mountain." Bilbo shook his head "No, we are losing this battle Thorin. Look out there!" Bilbo pointed onto the fields which were painted with crimson blood. "I told her to hide because if we lose Erebor, they would murder everyone. They would not spare her. Or your child." Everyone fell silent. Thorin stuttered "M... My... My what? " Gulping, Bilbo repeated "Y/N is carrying your child, Thorin. She told me herself." With a melancholic smile Thorin replied "I'm going to be a father." Dwalin placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head "There's no promise that we will all get through this. What Bilbo did was right. On the company's behalf, I thank you." Each dwarf bowed in respect to Thorin. He was taken back by their behaviour but humbled as well. Thorin nodded determinedly "I will find her. Be ready for battle when I return. Dwalin will you follow me to the fight one more time?" Dwalin paused and then spoke lowly "No." Gasps sounded from the group and Thorin, with betrayal in his eyes, looked at Dwalin. Dwalin explained "I will not follow you into battle. You may be our king, but you're a father now. Go, find Y/N. I will take your place on the field." Thorin had tears pricking in his eyes as the two embraced each other "Thank you brother."
With that, Thorin turned to face the dark depths of the halls of Erebor. Somewhere in there his wife, and his child, were waiting to be found, and he would do it. Marching through the corridors and halls, Thorin bellowed your name. You were so isolated and deep in sleep that you did not hear his crying. But he did not relent. Many tiring hours passed of shouting and knocking down old, worn doors. Eventually, Thorin stumbled upon a small cupboard. Gently, he pulled down the handle and opened the door. When he spied you, his heart leapt with joy. Hurriedly, he came to your side. You stirred at the commotion and blinked a few times before looking up at him with innocent eyes. "Thorin?" He did not reply, on placed one hand on your cheek and the other on your lower stomach. "I'm so sorry my darling. I will never hurt you like that again. I can't believe I'm going to be a father. We will be a family. I can't forgive myself for the way I acted. But I love you so much." He blathered on and you listened, a small smile dancing on your lips. When he finished, his chest heaving, you said quietly "We have to get through this war together. I love you too but we can't let those people out there be murdered for the sake of your gold." You weren't scolding him, you just wanted him to understand. You stroked his hair lovingly as he replied "Forget the gold! We will give Lake Town, and the elves their share when this is done. Dwalin has lead the company onto the field. They love you almost as much as I do." Together, you sat and held each other.
After a few moments, Thorin whispered to you "I believe we will get through this. I believe that for all our sakes, even the one who is yet to understand." He looked down at your stomach. The man loved the child already, he would be a marvellous father. You nodded in agreement and added "With luck we will all live to see a better world."
When the company returned at the end of the battle, you dreaded to see two particular boys missing. The company could not speak of it for weeks. You were left wondering what horrors had occurred on that battlefield. Needless to say, you and Thorin, and the rest of the dwarves grieved together for a long time. Thorin was broken apart for a while but you stayed with him, you grew stronger with him. You had won your freedom and your future. You were going to make the most of what you had left- a family.
So guys, here is part two to one of the Thorin stories. I really hope you enjoyed it! If you did, don't forget to tell me in the comments and vote for it :) I've got a lot of exams coming up so I won't be posting as regularly. But I'm still accepting requests and I will get round to writing all of them, so please feel free to send one in! See you next time <3
