"I love sarcasm. It's like punching someone in the face but with words." Zia said while smirking at the raven haired man she had came to adore. They had been together for years and despite her attempt to leave so he could have a normal family life without her making things weird for him. Or killing anyone that tried to harm him or his new family. He had tracked her down with the help of his successors and wife. Sometimes he wonders what his life would have been like without her in it. Or if things had went differently between them.

If he had never decided that she would be his adopted sister and nothing more. What could have been? Would they still be friends? or something more?

Dark eyes blinked in confusion as their owner turned his head slightly and touched his cheek. "Why did you just kiss me? I thought you were sleeping"

"It's your own fault for not answering me and just standing there like a space cadet." Koneko said softly so she wouldn't wake the little boy that still clung to her tightly. "Jeez, it's like he thinks I'll just disappear or something. L take your son please."

*L nods his head and gently removes his son's tiny hands from his sister's black shirt* Carefully he places the small child on the couch. "Tell me what's on your mind. Were you thinking about the past again? Or about what could have been?"

"You're not a mind reader too, are you?" the female laughed and shook her head no. "I'm just good at reading you. Now what do you want to ask me"

"Why did you help me that day in the nurse's office. You lied to Watari and said you let me in. I've always wondered why you did that" Zia chuckled and walked away coming back shortly with a piece of cake. "I thought you would have figured it out by now. And I know that's not really what you wanted to ask me" said the female in a teasing tone. "You're right, what I really wanted to ask is, have you ever thought about us? If things were different between us, would we be to-"

"You helped me first, I was simply returning the favor." the multicolored woman spoke cutting off the man. She too had thought about it at least once. Had she given into her curiosity that often tempted or plagued her mind with thoughts of what could have been and what ifs.

"Besides some mysteries are better left unsolved" muttered the female more to herself then to him as her mind wandered back to that day.

~~Zia's Flashback~~

It was another hot day and I for once didn't care about how many people would be at the beach or the pool today. So I talked my raven haired brother into going to the pool with me. He declined a few times but eventually gave in when I told him there was a tennis court by the pool. He liked the idea of being able to practice. Once we got to the pool, which oddly enough wasn't packed full of people. I picked a spot where L and I could see each other clearly.

Happy to be able to swim again after so many months of being mainly indoors. I eagerly ripped off my shirt, exposing my skin and the gray and white tied swimsuit to the sun. Turning around I drop the shirt and look at L. His hand moves up as his eyes widen, making his already large dark eyes larger. Trying hard I hold in my laughter as he soon goes back to his normal facade. "You going to be okay by yourself?" I asked him

"I'm sure I can manage" his monotone voice rings out. Nodding I smile and watch as he lazily heads over to the tennis court. After a few minutes I see him playing a game against someone. This makes me happy. I continue to watch his game from the poolside until it ends. He won hands down and I chuckle to myself. From what I can tell he barely even broke a sweat again. L's head turned slowly towards me, he looks like he's frowning as the person he was playing against talks. Maybe he felt my eyes on him or something?
