Missing A

I can see it clearly, his days are numbered and they're dropping quickly, what can I do? How do I save my friend from his fate? Can anyone even escape fate? This isn't how life is supposed to be.

"Are you alright? You're zoning out again, C."

"You've been doing that a lot lately. Maybe you need something sweet, want some of my jam? It's strawberry."

I looked towards the two boys, my friends here at Wammy's House, A and B. Since day one they have been by my side. We all just kind of clicked, like we knew that we'd be friends. B was the first one to speak up, crawling from underneath my bed like some kind of spider. It scared the hell out of me, I actually shouted his real name, his eyes grew wide and he whispered, "how do you know that?" All while looming over me, a thumb pressed to his lip before he bit down on his nail loudly. After that, he was by my side, then A showed up looking distressed and eager to leave the house. Anytime away was welcomed by the short male.

"See, C's being a space cadet again," B said while waving a jar of jam in front of me. "Huh, sorry, I'm here....kinda..." My eyes shift from B to A, who is looking at me equally worried. B pretty much pushed the jar into my hands, not taking no for an answer, not that I was about to actually say no. "I don't have a spo-" he cut me off. "Eat it with your fingers."

The look on my face made A chuckle, it's nice to see him smiling for once. B watched me closely, his habits were always odd, however, lately, they've became even odder. If that is at all possible, anyway this didn't surprise me much. "It's good right, the sugar is needed for your brain." He said in his usual slightly monotone voice. "B, cookies are way better than jam." Exclaimed A.

"Those, sir, are fighting words. I challenge you to a duel."

"Oh? You want me to kick your butt in shogi again, you know you can't beat me, B."

"I will never submit." As the two friends bickered I sat back and watched. These moments were rare. And all too soon would be nothing but a tarnished memory.

Later in the week, I ran into B, there was another test, another hard gruesome case to solve. A completed the task quickly as always but the images scarred him, they changed him. He was quickly becoming nothing but a broken child, stuck in the body of a young man, in a world of adults, with the emotional strength of a toddler. I looked to B as A passed us, his head hanging, ash brown locks covering his face, posture bad and getting worse.

I knew that B could see it too, the change in our friend, the change in his lifespan. After this one case, it had dropped faster than ever before. "What can we do, B?" My other friend said nothing, he glared while biting the nail on his thumb. "Surpass him..." he muttered. Thinking on the matter I agreed. "Time to take things seriously," this time I was the one muttering. If one of us surpassed A, he would no longer be pressured into becoming the next L. I'll work hard for you both, we will survive this hell together.

A has always been the brightest of us all, he simply shined no matter what it was we were doing. And at the same time, he was the most fragile. Unable to completely keep his emotions hidden or in check, a real bleeding heart. The pressure, it's killing him, I have to do something to save him.

I started to buckle down, studying harder, pushing myself further, placing top scores until the three of us are at the same level. But while I was pushing, studying, A was losing it, every day the weight increased and without his best friends around, it became too much.

"Hey C, let's go play outside!"

"No thanks, I am busy, sorry kid," I said while rushing off to meet A in his room. It had been too long since we last talked, so when I came bursting through the door, his irises, pools of sweet honey, lit up. We spent all day talking, playing games, it was like the good ol' days. B even joined us, he was smiling and happy as well. Dinner time came and went but none of us ate, too busy beating each other in random trivia games to notice. "Since I lost the last game, I will go get us some drinks," A said. "I'll come with, I need some Strawberry Jam anyways."

"Sure, B, sure, you just don't want C to beat you in another game." Teased A while walking out of their room, shortly afterward A came back. "B was called into the office for a case," A explained while giving me a cup of chocolate milk and a cookie from his secret stash, A never shares his cookies. As time went on I glanced at the clock and yawned, my friend was already passed out. He laid on his bed, soft locks fanning his face, a hand on his stomach as he mumbled in his sleep, confessing to the girl he likes. It was a heartwarming sight, one that will stay with me forever.

I watched him sleep for a while longer, never noticing the hands of the clock, of fate, everything faded to black. I awoke to the sounds of rushing footsteps. And in my own room, who moved me is unknown to me but if I had to guess, it was probably A. There's another test today, I better get moving.

I was filled with excitement when the latest test results came out, of course, I went running for my friends. Dodging kids and professors alike, never knowing why things had turned out this way. B nor A had shown up for the test, or our latest case. Dashing into the shared room of the two boys I've come to see as brothers, I am stopped by a pair of strong arms, a hand is placed over my eyes. But it's too late, I had already seen it, a body hanging, its eyes lifeless and dull, they bulged, they were once so bright. They used to be the color of a warm sunset, of autumn leaves, of honey.

I felt the air leave my lungs, a scream came from somewhere, it wasn't my voice, the voice that was screaming was feral, enraged, foreign to my ears. Yet my throat felt like it was on fire. So raw. "No one can escape it when it's their time. That's it, death will take what it is owed." Said a voice that was monotonous, it was dangerously low. "If only I could see the death of the world."

There were more tests, cases, tons of questions, I answered none of them, there was only one person I would answer to and that person would never show himself again. Then the day came when I lost my only other lifeline. Standing over my half-conscious body, the words he spoke were barely made out. I always thought they were a dream, now I know that was not the case. "I will not be seen as a carbon copy, as a backup. I will surpass L. If L is the world's greatest detective. I will be the world's greatest criminal. If L's a genius, then B's an extreme genius. If L's a freak, then B's an extreme freak."

My world came crashing down after B left, well what remained of it. There was no longer a reason to stay at Wammy's House, in a daze I went out, no shoes, no coat, no money, nameless. Roaming the streets, I simply never returned.

"C..." says the computerized voice that I have come to loathe years ago.

"L..."

"I require your assistance." There is no reply from me. "I suspect that you've heard of Kira and that you've been keeping up with the case." Again I don't answer, knowing L can see and hear me just fine. He did take over my computer's camera and audio. Finally, after ten minutes of us sitting in our respected seats, in dead silence, with me at my place of business and L, god (of death or otherwise) knows where. The silence is broken. "B is dead." Is this news suppose to make me act? Cry out in a rage as I did in the past? I knew he would die the moment I learned about a certain letter that was sent to the LA police department. B always loved making puzzles like that. "He died of a mysterious heart attack." I failed you both, I am sorry.

An address showed up on my screen along with directions. Burning them within my memory, I blink then destroyed the computer.

"L..."

"I know, Watari. C isn't doing this for me, in fact, helping me is laughable, shameful in C's eyes. This is for them, B, who didn't want to be a copy but most of all...."

"C is Missing A."

Another short one shot, I enjoyed this and it's my first attempt at a reader insert. I think I did well enough. 1530 word count.
