Zane's parents didn't let him go to the funeral.

Correction, Zane's dad didn't let him go to the funeral. Zane almost felt bad leaving them, who were they gonna torture when he was gone?

Sometimes Zane felt mischievously happy just leaving them like that. Sometimes he regretted that he had agreed to do it.

Somehow Zane was convinced that the plan would fail. That they would get caught or that the car would break down.

He couldn't seem to convince himself that he was leaving, that it was real. Everything just seemed so normal, except that Zane didn't go to school anymore. He woke up like any other day, he read and learned like any other day and he went to bed and slept like any other day.

Until that one night, the night they had agreed to meet outside Kawaii~Chan's house.

Chloe was standing alone in the dark by the running car, smoking a cigarette. It and the cars red lights being the only light source in the night, it lit up Chloe's face in a dramatic shadow. It made her look weird and kinda scary.

"Do you now suddenly smoke?" Zane asked. She didn't answer, just blew it in his face. He coughed.

"Have you heard from Kawaii~Chan?" She asked instead. Zane shook his head.

"Wanna see something cool?" Chloe's voice had suddenly changed, she now sounded goofy, and sent him  a mischievous smirk. Without really getting an answer out of Zane, she walked over to the trunk of the car.

For a second Zane thought she was gonna open and a dead body would just be lying there. But then she opened it and got Zane more confused.

"What is that?" Zane was looking at a big vase. It took him a moment to recognize it: It was a vase his mother once bought, one of the expensive ones.

"You stole my mom's vase?!" The words ran out Zane's mouth automatically, but he couldn't help but laugh.

"Yes."

"When? How? Why?" Zane asked and took another glare at the big vase his mother had used so much money on. He laughed more.

"Come on, It's not stealing when one of the people who live in the house literally gave you the key." That was when Zane remembered it, right before the Christmas market, Zane knew there was something wrong. He even thought about it.

"And may I say, It's god damn heavy!"

"And as you may know, it's worth quite a lot of money, so I thought it would come in handy." Zane gave her a glare of daggers, but he couldn't help but smile under the mask

A big slam went like shock waves out in the dark as Chloe, with a quick movement slammed the trunk. "No need to tell Kawaii~Chan about this," she whispered and threw the cigarette on the ground.

"Zane Kun!" Kawaii~Chan hurled her arms around Zane's neck and kissed him. That was the fourth time. Zane smiled at the thought.

"Okay, no time for anything like that" Chloe waved a hand in disgust at the two, and mumbled something about straight couples. Chloe opened the door and sat down behind the steering wheel.

The ride was long, and as the sun was rising in the horizon, Kawaii~Chan fell asleep. She was lying sweetly in the back seat, snoring silently to herself.

"If you're going to stare at her the whole way, then you should go sit next to her," Chloe said. Zane ignored her and turned around.

"Where are we going?" Zane asked. Chloe shrugged.

The sun was young and a yellow light was spreading right where sky and ground met, coloring the surrounding clouds pink, as a dividing contrast on the blue sky. And Zane was happy, because it was exactly as John Green had written in the end of that book he had refused to finish, leaving felt good.
