“Hello, As salam ulaikum, Dag, 你好(Ni Hao), gutten tag, bonjour, aloha, shalom, konnichiwa, sawat dee khaa, apa kabar?” She says. Every single word means hello. I rolled my eyes as soon as she finished saying. I’m surprised by my friends, by everyone in this room, laughing and clapping and cheering for her after finishing her greetings or salutations whatever.
Silence sweeps the room again.
“Show off” Murphy said, a little too loud, that the whole class make a boo while the substitute just laughed.
She then straightened up herself; stare at Murphy with her deadly eyes. I see Murphy stiffen.
“What was that again?” The substitute asked Murphy.
“Umm… Nothing…” He replied
She rose on of her eyebrows.
“Really? I heard somebody said that I was showing off”
Dang! She’s really showing who’s in charge and I guess Murphy is in trouble
“You are so in trouble Murph…” I whispered to him.
He didn’t reply me; he just shook his head, which I’m taking as a no in answer. How can he be so sure?
“I expect you to respect me young man” She says in a tone that shows that she has authority; that she’s in charge. I don’t know where she learned to talk like that but if she talks like that, it’s hypnotizing. Like we’re expected to follow that order even if we don’t want to follow it.
Murphy didn’t argue with that last statement. Whether he agrees on that or he just didn’t want trouble.
“My name is Mary Murphy.” She said.
My eyes widen. She’s Adam Murphy’s mom! That why he didn’t argue with her because he didn’t want to ruin the mother and son relationship.
“I’m a TV hostess, as you all know and I’m going to teach, I mean substitute Ms. Ivy today.” She continued.
“Today, you’ll be working in pairs. Ms. Ivy has to go to Washington for some kind of family emergency and I have volunteered to substitute for her when she’s gone.” She said.
“Question, are you going to pair it up for us or are we going to search for our own pairs?” Somebody asked.
“I am going to pair you all up.” She answered.
“First, Patricia with Mara.” She said while looking at the list which comes from her bag. I’m surprised because the bag looks surprisingly small but it carries lots of stuff.
She continues pairing up people. She stopped when there’s down to four. Joy, Adam Murphy, Ali and me.
“The next pair is…..” She stayed quiet for a while.
My heart is now racing… please let it be Joy and me. Please. I don’t want to be with Ali, and not that I don’t want to be with Murphy, but I can’t stand seeing Joy suffer because she had to work with Ali.
When it comes to group work, Ali is always the one who wants credit, she wants people to praise her, to compliment her, but when it comes to criticism, she always blame the partner. Joy is very sensitive, and I’m afraid that when it comes to Mary Murphy who worked in the entertaining business a lot would just criticise them so badly that it might hurt Joy’s feeling. I wouldn’t want that to happen. Once, her mom hurt her feeling and it caused a lot of trouble to us. She cried everyday telling us that this isn’t fair, that isn’t fair. I don’t want that to happen again. My heart stops beating when the great Mary Murphy starts saying something again.
