me: is it just me, or is that stupid?

me: i mean, for goodness sake, over seven million signatures have already been signed! How is that thing still a threat?

mam: Because until it's been debated, signatures don't mean anything.

me: its still really stupid

mam: They'll have a date set when they debate things like this in Government. It's not a law yet, it's just a proposal, and they'll debate it and decide what happens, and they

mam: They'll look at the petition then.

mam: They aren't trying to prevent fan art and a lot of that will be covered by the 'fair use' law

me: i read the wikipedia article, and apparently SOPA is "To promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by combating the theft of U.S. property, and for other purposes."

me: i don't understand how that makes any sense...

me: of course, wikipedia isn't the most reliable thing in the world, but its always half accurate at the least

mam: They're trying to prevent people copying other people's films and photos and artwork and selling it for their own profit.

me: okay so that makes sense

me: and i've heard of some stories on wattpad which are exact copies of Twilight but with different names and such

mam: There are people who copy things off etsy or artists' websites and then mass produce them for selling in supermarkets and things

me: okay i can understand trying to ban that

mam: The problem is when people who draft laws don't fully understand the issues involved, but petitions are a way of telling them about the problems.

me: okay, so the petitions aren't to fully go against it, just the things that people might not have thought about/things that was worded badly/etc.

mam: This particular law seems to have been drafted by people who've never used the internet or a computer before.

me: and therefore don't quite understand exactly that the internet is excessively made of fanart/fanfiction

mam: It's not just fan art in that law, it'll give the government powers to read people's emails, shut down any website for any reason, block people who've downloaded things illegally, even if they didn't know it. Even if they paid for it.

me: okay. so, bad.

mam: Terrible.

mam: Most people who've ever touched a computer are against it.

me: so, anyone who isn't against it is massively outnumbered by about... ten million people or so?

mam: People only count in lawmaking if they're in Government, or make a LOT of noise.
