Sarah:

“Gorgeous.” I gave a shy smile towards my mom. My hair was let down in its natural wave. The makeup on my skin was natural except for the small bit of thickness on the eyeliner and mascara. On the bare skin of my shoulders were few specks of glitter, and I smelled faintly of roses and sugared pomegranate. I had French-tipped nails, and all my accessories were silver. On my ears were diamond earrings the shape of teardrops, and about four bangles jingled around my wrists. The necklace I wore were strings of diamonds and a large pendant at the very bottom. And as for my eyes, it may be some illusion, but it appeared to glow a much more illuminating blue.

The silken royal blue dress just went an inch above my knees like before, and I kept tugging at the black lace around the skirt of the dress. My shoes were open toe, ebony black with simple, small, sparkling gems along the straps at the front of my foot. They had small heels, adding about an inch to my height. I gazed at myself toward the full-body mirror, and I couldn’t help but twirl to see how I looked all around. She was right. I was gorgeous.

After spending about five or more minutes admiring myself in the mirror, I heard the doorbell ring. As I headed to the banister, my parents had already opened the door for Leon to come in. Down the steps I took my time, giving him a long moment to gaze at me in awe. His grey eyes were widened in amazement, his jaw dropping just a tad bit, his brows raised. Once I reached the ground floor, standing just a foot from Leon, his facial expression still didn’t budge.

I broke into a wide smile, giving a small chuckle at his reaction. He blinked a few times before letting out a cough, snapping him out of whatever trance he was in. “Sarah,” he began, “you look beautiful.” My smile widened as I felt my face reddened at his remark.

I took the moment to examine him in his black tux with a blue tie that matched the color of my eyes and dress. His dark brown hair was toned down but still messy in a way. One hand was in his pocket while the other was behind his back. I could already guess what he was holding. After letting another moment pass, he held out a corsage. It was a rose dyed blue, and it was beautiful.

My left hand outstretched towards him and he took the liberty of putting it around my wrist. And right after, he did the cheesiest thing ever: He brought my hand to his lips and kissed it softly. “Ready to go?” he asked in a smooth voice. I nodded, but my dad stopped us.

“What about that picture?” Leon and I exchanged glances and we walked up to the fourth step of the stairs. Turning to the camera, we smiled until the camera flashed. After another picture, my parents said to have fun, and we walked to his car hand-in-hand.

The whole ride was silent, but once we got to the school building, we were greeted by all the other couples almost immediately. Then Sophia came up to us with her arm laced around Jake’s. Her red hair was wavy and tied into a perfect ponytail with no small strands of hair standing up at random places. Her makeup was all natural, and her white prom dress definitely brought out her slight tan from going out to the beach yesterday. As for Jake, he had a black tux and a hot pink tie to match the bow at the waist of Soph’s dress.

“Hey!” she chirped. Her mouth formed a perfect O in astonishment, cupping her hands to her mouth. “Oh. My. God!” she squealed. “You look amazing! I’m so jealous!” I held a timid smile. While I did appreciate the comment, I was still a bit…uncomfortable being complimented like this and so frequently. “I’ve got to take you to Leanne.”

“Where is she?” I asked.

“She’s by the punch bowl,” she answered simply before dragging us inside the building.

The gym was unrecognizable with all the décor. There were strips of ribbons or whatever all across the walls and ceilings. Multicolored balloons floated at every table, and there was confetti everywhere. Leanne wasn’t at the punch bowl, but rather at our table by the built-in (and temporary) stage against the wall. Our school’s band was up on stage doing covers of famous and infamous songs by rock bands.
