Moonlight Maze

23 4 2

When dawn drew down
on the night
and all the unseen
came to light
these restless mares
held a breath
and dared not dance
in fear of death

When we climbed quiet
on hapless heights
and all our dreaming
never turned out right
These broken bottles
dripping sugar rum
were all we had
to keep us numb

And yet that pain
still set so deep
kept us sane
on iridescent reefs
One day up
and another down
One night drunk
and another sound

Here we stumble
in rounded squares
with words we fumble
and constant stares
Here the drifting
of the moonlight maze
passes one hundred proof
of better days
