"Sophie, please." I begged as we sat down at our table. "You can't leave me alone there."

"But it's your cousin's party!"

"I haven't even met the girl. I won't know anybody there." I rebutted.

She scrunched up her nose, thinking. I smiled, that meant I had convinced her. "Posh parties aren't my thing, Sam." She grumbled once more. "But fine, I'll go."

"Thank you, thank you, thank you." I cheered. "Besides, who knows, maybe it'll be fun!"

"Yeah, maybe this was a bad idea." I admitted as soon as the huge house came into view. Sophie scoffed.

"I think this is the biggest house I've seen in my life, and I've gone to Eli's place."

"Well, let's just get it over with."

"Why don't we just go back?"

"You know I can't. My mom practically forced me to come, she said I could finally meet my cousin since she lived here."

With that, I took a deep breath and we stepped in.

Everything was big and dramatic. The ceiling, the marble floors, the decor, the paintings. The soft music played in the background as well dressed guys and girls talked in the living room. I looked down at my simple white dress. Well, crap, there went all my self confidence for the night.

"You must be Sam." A girl with chin length brown hair came up to us with a dazzling smile. "I'm your cousin, Peyton."

"Oh, nice to meet you." I said. "Um this is Sophie, a friend of mine."

"Oh great! Come on in girls the party's just getting started." She turned and ran off with the rest. Sophie and I shared a look, nearly laughing, but we eventually followed.

It was nothing too bad, Peyton introduced some friends of hers and we talked. Sophie wasn't doing too bad either, she was talking it up with some guy next to where the food was. And I was talking to another guy, Lance. He was calm and nice and just normal, which was refreshing. I felt my anxiety vanish here; there was nothing to be anxious about. It was just relaxing.

We were talking about nothing important, when he cursed under his breath when he looked at something over my shoulder. "Play along." He whispered to me as a short girl came up to us. Lance instantly put on a bright smile.

"Lance, good to see you again." She said, casting a quick glance at me as I stood there awkwardly.

"Amber, it's been a long time." He swung his arm over my shoulder and I bit down on my lip. What was he playing at? "Oh, I should introduce you two." He said. "Sam, this is Amber. Amber, Samantha. My girlfriend." He smiled at me with affection. My mouth popped open.

Amber's smile vanished. "Oh. I didn't know you-"

"Yeah, how long has it been, babe?"

"Four months and counting." I offered, batting my eyelashes dreamily at Lance.

"Oh. Well, nice to meet you. I should go say hi to the, um, others." She gulped, nodded and strutted past us. Lance took my wrist and guided me outside towards the pool where he finally burst out laughing. "Whew, thanks for doing me a solid back there."
