My wife and I moved to Indianapolis a few years back. We were a year out of college and rented an apartment that was pretty average. We bought a small dog right after moving in. Our complex seemed very safe. Once I even left the door open a crack and the wind pushed it open for two days but my neighbors notified building management and they locked it.
One night, we went out to walk our dog. My wife was on the sidewalk buy i stepped aside from the sidewalk behind some small trees so my dog could pee. A car pulled up with two guys in the front. Mids 20s. My wife was slowly sauntering, oblivious and looking at her phone. I see the guys look at her and then quietly talk to each other. They parked the car in the street right next to her. The had just cracked their doors to get up when I walked out. I'm a pretty big dude at 6'3 and 220 lbs with a large frame. The two dudes then shut their doors and drove away.
I never told my wife but i genuinely think they would have abducted her. Around this same time there were news reports of two guys trying to snatch women. Unfortunately I didn't get their tag number.
