Edd - Something fishy

Honestly, I couldn't believe it myself that I gave up that easily. I KNEW something had happened between Tom and Tord.  I KNEW they were both in Tord's room. I mean, I wasn't a complete idiot. Were they trying to kill each other in there, hoping we wouldn't notice it? Maybe Matt wouldn't, but they couldn't be so naive that they thought I was just as stupid. I wasn't that easily fooled.

And I was absolutely sure they were hiding something major from us. It was hard not to be curious, but there was another part of me that was just as worried. It was probably nothing,  but I couldn't help but be uneasy like something was very, very wrong.

"Hey, Edd? Are you okay?" Matt asked me. He was sitting on the couch, enjoying the rest of the film. Over half an hour had passed since I looked for Tom and Tord, but I just couldn't concentrate on the film at all. I always kept thinking about them and what they could be hiding.

"I'm okay, but... I'm not sure if Tom and Tord are. I worry about them, you know. That they might hurt each other."

Matt looked at me. "Why do you think so?"

"I don't know, Tord was acting really strange back when I was in front of his door and..." I could see it on Matt's face that he didn't know what I was talking about. Fan - fucking -tastic. Maybe he even forgot their names again.

"I think I will just go back and ask them if they are alright," I sighed and left Matt on the sofa.

"Okay!" he cheerfully replied before shifting his attention back on the TV. He didn't seem to care all that much about them. Well, he always forgot they existed, so why would he? Sometimes it was hard to be friends with him. Or with any of them for that matter.

When I came to Tom's - no, it was Tord's room again -, I was about to knock on the door, but was stopped by strange noises and hearing Tom and Tord arguing with hushed voices.

"What are you-?!"

"I can't walk around like this, Jehovah's witness! Stop telling me I'm doing everything wrong!" Tord growled.

"Okay, commie! But I am not the one who-" Something heavy fell, maybe Tord gave Tom a hard shove or someone crashed to the ground. It definitely sounded like their fight had gotten physical.

I couldn't help but get angry as I listened. I called it! I had known Tom must be there! Where else would he be?! Tord had lied to me! And Tom had just stayed silent? Those sons of bitches! How dare Tord make me feel bad while lying through his teeth?!

"Can't you stand for at least five seconds without falling?" Tom hissed.

"Ugggh, shut the fuck up, Tom! You aren't doing any better either! So quit your whining, you hypocrite!"

My anger was quickly replaced by confusion. What the hell was even going on in there? I carefully pressed my ear against the door, hoping not to alert them, and listened. I knew it was an invasion of privacy, but since when had that ever stopped me? I was too curious for my own good. And too worried for it to bother me.

"You are so goddamn annoying. Why don't you just do everyone a favor and off yourself?"

"When we are finished with this I will-"

There was a very loud noise. Startled, I stumbled a few steps backwards and my elbow accidentally hit a vase. For a second I thought it would just roll to the edge of the table before stopping, but luck wasn't on my side today. It fell right off the table and the sound of something breaking had never been louder. I mentally cursed myself for being so clumsy.

They both stayed silent for a moment. I thought they might have shrugged it off, but then "Okay, who is there?"

I didn't know if I should even answer. They wouldn't like the fact that I just listened in on their argument, that I was spying on them because I wanted to find out whatever was going on. But I couldn't just pretend I wasn't there. That might work on Matt, but not on them.

"I...uh..."

"Edd?"

"Yeah, I...er...I came here to ask you if you are really fine, but...I...I heard a loud noise and it scared me enough to accidentally break a vase!" I stuttered. Bad lie, Edd. They will never believe that I scolded myself.

"Okay Edd, what are you REALLY doing here? Are you... are you spying on me?" He knew it. That was definitely not good. I failed my mission. I was such a massive failure.

"N-no, I didn't spy on you, I swear, I just came here right now because I was searching for Ringo! B-b-but I heard Tom's voice so..." I was such a horrible liar. Where had my amazing lying skill vanished to?

"Okay Edd, I'm here. Are you happy now?" Tom responded in an annoyed tone.

"T-tom!" I shouted. I didn't need to fake any surprise. I had expected Tord to keep lying and for Tom to play along, not this. Why did they tell me he was here NOW? Did they just want to ease my mind? They just wanted me gone, didn't they? Oh, they were definitely hiding something. And detective Edd was on the case.

"Yeah, it's me. You see we are...fine," Tom finally said. The way he forced himself to spit those words out wasn't lost on me.

"Can you just go now, please? We have... something to deal with... something very important... Tom is helping me with a project, yes" Tord mumbled.

"But I could also help you!" I shouted.

"NO! I-I mean, it's nothing YOU can help with."

"Please Edd, it's just a...little problem we have. In a few hours, we will have solved it. No big deal, really."

"Seriously Edd, you can't help us with this."

There was an awkward silence for a few seconds. I narrowed my eyes. They had no idea that I wouldn't let this go. I might pretend to, but I wouldn't follow their advice. Mainly because what they told me was bullshit.

Tom sighed. "Okay Edd, maybe you can-"

"Tom...! Are you mental?!" Tord yelled.

"No Edd, you can't help us," Tom quickly corrected himself. "Sorry."

"What are you two hiding? You know Matt and I will find it one way or the other even if you don't want us to," I answered, scowling at the door, hoping they could sense my anger through it. It pissed me off (and saddened me) that they didn't tell me what was going on. I was mostly angry though.

I thought we were best friends, that we would tell each other pretty much everything, but they didn't trust me enough to even tell me their problem. They never did. And they didn't open the door! What a way to TORDture a curious man!

I sighed dramatically.  "Okay, I will go now. If you change your mind, we are gonna be watching TV. And guys?"

"What, Edd?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't expect me to stay patient or give up. I will find it out soon enough. Whether you tell me or not!" With those last words, I left them to hopefully quiver in fear.
