KAYLA’S P.O.V.

“Look Kayla,” my mom said, trying to control her voice, “I don’t want you going out to see that boy again.”

Yet again, I was stuck in another fight with my mother. I had another date with Niall tonight, and I was supposed to be there ten minutes ago. My mom had made me late... again. I’d been fighting with her for the past twenty minutes.

“Why mom? What’s wrong with him?” I countered.

“I told you already! He’s a bum! He’s not going anywhere in life!” My mother retorted.

“What?” I stuttered, my voice rising, “Why do you say that?”

“You said he didn’t have a job-”

“He’s opening a recording studio with his friend Liam!”

“And how many times have those outlandish dreams actually worked? Come on Kayla, use your brain for once.”

My jaw clenched and my hands balled into fists, but my mom didn’t stop there.

“You should’ve stayed with Jonathan, you were lucky he even thought to date someone like you.”

“What do you mean someone like me?” I spat through gritted teeth.

“I mean, someone who doesn’t ever think and just does what they want without worrying about anyone else.”

            “What’re you suggesting?”

“I’m just saying that you don’t ever think and that you should’ve stayed with someone who could’ve taken care of you.”

“Taken care of me? I can take care of myself! I’m not stupid!”

“Are you sure about that?” She mumbled just loud enough for me to hear.

“What did you say?” I demanded, taking a step towards my mom.

“I asked if you were sure that you weren’t stupid,” she said simply, raising her head slightly.

My eyes widened and my mouth dropped. My mom was calling me stupid. I’ve had worse things told to me, but that small realization hit me harder than hitting a brick wall.

“I mean, it’s a wonder to me how you ever got into college,” she pushed on. “I think Jonathan was a sweet boy who could’ve taken great care of you. Even... what was his name? Oh right, Tate Decorte. Even Tate would be better than him.”

I felt my anger starting to turn to tears. Tate had been a great boyfriend, but he didn’t really pay that much attention to me. He kept talking about some ex he had and how he missed her. He had been my first, and I thought he might’ve been the one for me, but we broke up shortly after. He said that he was still in love with his recent ex. I didn’t remember her name, but it still hurt.
