Twenty minutes later, we walked into our house and I slipped my shoes off.

“Family room, everyone, now,” Anne stated. We knew not to fight with her so we all walked slowly into the family room and sat down. Harry took me into his lap, my threat of tears becoming stronger and stronger.

Gemma sat down in the middle of the couch Harry and I were sitting on and crossed her legs. I rested my head on Harry’s collarbone, trying not to cry. I told myself I wouldn’t. I was stronger than this.

“Who wants to start explaining?” Anne asked.

Gemma and I stayed quiet until Harry spoke up. Well, Gemma wasn’t even involved in this, so she could just sit there and watch.

“Mum, can I just tell you that Maya and I are perfectly fine now.”

“I can see that,” she said, “But I want to know what happened. I want to know exactly why Maya ran away from home for a week and stayed at that man’s house.”

“Well…” Harry started. I closed my eyes, knowing that if he started talking about this, I would start crying. The guilt was still eating away at me, over a month after the incident actually happened. Harry went on to explain what happened. I buried my face in his chest, wishing all these problems would just go away. They weren’t going away though; Harry and I both knew that.

“You stayed with your ex-boyfriend?!” Anne exclaimed. I’d never really seen her angry before, but now I think I was experiencing it.

“Mum,” Harry said giving her a look.

“No, Harry that is not alright!”

“Maya’s back now! She’s been back for over a month! I’ve forgiven her.”

They were yelling about me. Right in front of me. Gemma sat off to the side, not wanting to be part of this heated conversation. I felt Harry’s arms tighten around me, as he was being protective over me.

“How easily did you forgive her?”

“Mum,” Harry said, his voice hard. I noticed his accent when he said it.

“Maya ran away from you Harry, it’s not so easy to forgive.”

“I love Maya, Mum, of course I forgave her.”

“That doesn’t get rid of the fact that she ran away from you!”

I looked up at Harry who looked really angry. My eyes filled with fear, but he kept his protective grasp around me. Gemma looked at me sympathetically. I mouthed ‘I’m sorry’ to her and she nodded, smiling warmly at me.

“What was it like when Maya first came back?” Anne demanded. I was getting nervous that she was going to start yelling at me again.
