I looked both ways when I reached the front side walk. I decided to go right for no particular reason. I walked until I reached town and then I turned left. I didn’t care where I was going.

I reached for my pocket and felt my phone. Good, I had it with me… I sighed and walked into the park where Harry and I first saw Tate. I exhaled and dared to walk in, but my legs guided me anyways. I looked around, enjoying the fresh air. I wasn’t on the sidewalk that went throughout the whole park, but on the grass instead. It was getting dark out and I could see a lot of people were already leaving.

I looked forward and there he was. My husband. He was facing me, but I wasn’t sure if he saw me. I stopped dead in my tracks and gasped. He was just casually sitting on the bench looking around the park at everyone. I saw a tree in my peripheral vision that looked big enough for me to hide behind. I looked back at Harry and took three big steps to the tree and pressed my back against it. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and I took it out. It was a text from Tate. I groaned and opened it.

I’m really sorry. Are you okay?

I didn’t reply and stuffed my phone back into my pocket. I peeked around the tree again and Harry was looking in my direction. I immediately brought my head back behind the tree and shut my eyes closed. Maybe he wouldn’t come this way. Our house was in the opposite direction, he wouldn’t walk over here anyways. I held my breath and tried to think of happy thoughts.

I knew for a fact that I wasn’t going back to Tate’s house tonight. I thought of all the possibilities and the first person who popped into my mind was Kayla. I dared to turn back around and Harry was leaving in the opposite direction. I let out a sigh of relief and took a step forward. It was funny how dark it had gotten. I must’ve been gone for at least half an hour. It was nearing nine o’ clock right now.

I stepped out from behind the tree and Harry was out of sight. I was so close to him. I could’ve gone up to him and said something. I had no idea how to explain myself though. What would I have said? Oh hey, here I am after a week of being away from the house because I ran away and stayed at my ex-boyfriend’s house. That wouldn’t be considered acceptable. Harry was mad at me anyways. He didn’t want me back at home.

I walked back to the street and took out my phone. I scrolled through my contacts, passing Harry’s name. I stopped at Kayla’s and pressed my phone to my ear. It rang a couple times before she picked up.

            “Hello?” she asked.

“Kayla, it’s me, Maya,” I said.

“Oh hey,” she said sounding a bit distracted.

            “You okay?” I asked.

            “Fine, is something wrong?”

“Yeah, I was actually wondering if you could come pick me up… I’m not at home and I need a place to stay… and I was hoping maybe I could stay with you?” I asked hopefully.

“Maya…” she said her voice trailing off.

            “I mean, you don’t have to but…”
