I could never love her for the fear of losing her would be too strong.

He asked her to stay with him.

He wanted her to stay with him, but just like he guessed, she refused.

Having sold her apartment when they first moved in together, Evelyn had no where to stay but her parents' place, but since it was too far from her workplace, she couldn't stay there.

Tony offered her to stay in his new tower, formerly known as Stark Tower, but after the battle of New York, he got it renovated, and it was now named the Avengers Tower.

Surely, she had heard of all of them, the videos on the news that day weren't fooling anybody, and she sure as hell feared for her parents' life in that chaos.

She feared for his life too, if she was being honest with herself.

And after the Chitarui came the Mandarin, and nothing ever devastated her more than seeing her old home crumble into the ocean with all the memories they have built along with it.

He was presumed dead after that, but if she knew anything about Tony Stark, she would know that he was very much alive and well, trying to find a way to stop the new villain who had entered his world, and the world of people he cared about.

She worried about him, that was a fact, but it wasn't enough for her to go back and see if he was alright.

She pondered over her selfish decision plenty of times, but every single time she would end it by reminding herself of the very night she left him.

She reminded himself that she left for a reason, and that was enough of a reason for her not to come back.

Her mind wouldn't stop thinking about him even when she had convinced herself that she moved on, which she did.

She didn't know for a fact that she stopped loving him, but she knew that she loved him a whole lot less than she did before.

But Tony Stark...

Tony Stark had once been the reason she breathed, he had once been the reason for her smiles, her laughter.

Tony Stark had been essential in her universe, he had been needed.

And as she stood merely inches away from him right now, she couldn't help but remember all the numerous times he would look at her like he was doing right now.

Eyes, sad and hopeful, wearing that same sheepish smile he wore when he first told her that she meant more to him than she thought.

That he was serious about her.

That she wasn't just someone else on his never ending list of one night stands.

"Are you sure, I mean I have plenty of rooms, I could-"

"It's fine Tony. Really. I'm staying with, Jace."

His smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but nevertheless, his face showed no annoyance.

Just a tinge of sorrow, and regret.
