They met in kindergarten. Roman, in a Party City prince costume and Virgil, in a hoodie that was way too big. Roman very quickly became the popular kid and Virgil, not so much. They hated each other.
"Promise me that we'll never be friends." Roman said one day.
"I promise." Virgil responded.

They became friends in 3rd grade. Romans friends decided they didn't like him and Virgil was being bullied. They had both become outcasts. Roman saw Virgil pinned to the wall of the school building and he became the knight he decided he was going to be in kindergarten. To say the least, Virgil wasn't bullied again for a while.
"Promise me you'll protect me." Virgil said through his tears after being pinned to a wall.
"I promise. As long as you promise to be my friend forever." Roman responded.
"I promise." Virgil smiled.

Virgil developed his crush in 4th grade. Roman was playing soccer, Virgil watching him, following Romans number with his eyes. Roman had fallen. He was crying, clutching his foot. Virgil ran down to the field, tears forming in his eyes.
Roman woke up in Urgent Care with a broken toe. He looked around, his parents on the couch by him, Virgil on the chair. That was the moment Virgil realized his crush.
He ran up to the bed and said
"Promise me that you'll never scare me like that again."
"I promise." Roman said, smiling.

Roman developed his crush in 5th grade. He was preforming in the elementary school play of Cinderella, obviously as the prince. Virgil sat in the front row, cheering on his friend and the other performers. He clapped and whistled the loudest out of everyone when Roman took his final bow. That meant so much to Roman. His own father wasn't there, he didn't approve of him in theater. Virgil also hated Cinderella, which made it mean even more. He walked off the stage and was immediately greeted by a bear hug from his best friend and lots of congratulations and apologies for not bringing flowers. Roman hugged him tighter and whispered
"Promise you will always cheer for me."
And Virgil whispered back
"I promise."

Roman fell in love in 6th grade. Their teacher had made a quite stupid choice to talk about protests at prides. He was talking about how the homophobes were doing the right thing. How gays are bad and are going to hell. Roman heard Virgil stand up, tears in his eyes. Only Roman knew Virgil was gay. The darkly dressed boy simply walked to the classroom door. The teacher got mad and asked him what he was doing. Virgil responded
"Im going to hell. Like you said I was going to." And walked out. Roman fell in love right then. He followed the boy a moment after, saying he was meeting him in hell.
They sat outside the classroom, laughing and talking.
"Promise me you will stay snarky." Roman smiled.
"As long as you promise to have my back when im snarky." Virgil laughed.
"I promise."

Virgil fell in love in 9th grade. He had told himself he was never going to fall in love, but Roman made it hard. Virgil had become part of stage crew for Romans first big musical role as Danny in Grease. Virgil had seen him struggle on some of his lines and get frustrated. Virgil didn't stop smiling and telling him it was going to be okay.
"Promise you'll never give up on yourself." Virgil told his friend in a soothing tone.
"As long as you promise to never give up on me." Roman replied. It was that moment, that Virgil broke his deal. He was in love.
"I promise." He choked out.

They got together in 10th grade. They were sitting on a bench in their high school courtyard, an one earbud in each boys ear. Virgil began shiver from a fall breeze passing by. Without a second thought, Roman gave Virgil his letter jacket, forgetting to remove the note he was writing. Virgil wore his jacket for the rest of the day. Close to the end of the day, he stuffed his hands in his best friends pocket and found a note with his name on it. It read
"Dear Virgil,
Hey. So, I know we're best friends but I've loved you since we were in 6th grade. So, do you want to go out with me? If so, tell me. If not, sorry to ruin everything." Virgil did what the note said and told Roman he would go out with him.
They hugged as Roman said
"Promise me we'll never break up."
"I promise."

They had their first kiss in 10th grade. At the school dance. Of course the two went together, they had been dating for 4 months. A slow song had come on and they danced together, one of the only people doing so. They song was talking about kissing so they did what the song said. It soon became the boys favorite thing.
"Promise me that wont be the last time that happens." Roman said against his boyfriends lips.
"I promise." Virgil smiled and kissed Roman again.

They got engaged at 22 years old. Roman took Virgil on a date and once they got to their shared apartment, Roman made a beeline for the speaker and played their song, Sweet Caroline. They danced and danced until Roman got down on one knee and proposed. He said
"Promise me that we'll be together forever."
"I promise." His crying boyfriend said.

They got married at 23. A beautiful spring wedding. Patton and Logan were the best men. The vows were exchanged, they were married and danced to Sweet Caroline. As they were driven away from the wedding venue, Virgil turned to his husband.
"Promise me that we'll be this happy forever." He said, grinning.
"I promise." Roman smiled.

Many more promises were made over the years, the biggest one being:
"Promise me that we will be good parents."
"I promise."
Before they picked up their new daughter from the adoption agency.

They made big promises, little promises and every other kind of promise until they died.
