Lindsey said, ‘‘One slight problem.’’

‘‘What?’’ Sitting in these uncomfortable chairs in Socials, waiting for the teacher to come in, was the last thing I wanted to do. I wanted to get up and move. I wanted to run. I ran because I was trying to keep my sanity, and it also gave me great legs.

Biting her lip, Lindsey took the chair in front of me. ‘‘Erick has a girlfriend.’’

     Well. This was news.

‘’Um, that’s irrelevant,’’ I said, though of course it wasn’t, but I wanted it to be.

‘‘How is that irrelevant? Your plan was to get Erick to be your boyfriend, but he can’t exactly do that because he. Has. A. Girlfriend. That’s completely relevant, Hannah!’’

‘‘Linds, shhh.’’ We were in a classroom with a bunch of eavesdropping, nosy ninth-graders. ‘‘Just yell it to the whole world, why don’t you? Who is she?’’

Lindsey sighed and moved her fingers like she wanted a joint. Which she probably did. ‘‘God, who?’’

     ‘‘Erick’s girlfriend.’’

‘’I don’t know her name. Actually, I don’t even know if it’s a her. She—it—has short brown hair. Wearing a green toque. Kinda tall. God, she has no acne. Why does she have no acne?’’

I didn’t answer. Somehow, I knew exactly who Lindsey was talking about.

‘‘Dude,’’ said Jared, Lindsey’s boyfriend, ‘‘are you referring to Shain Watts?’’

     Lindsey snapped her fingers. ‘‘Yes!’’

     ‘‘Yes,’’ I echoed.

Jared shrugged. ‘‘They’re tight, you know. Her and Erick. It’s kinda cute in a manly way, you know?’’

Lindsey stared at him, like, What the hell are you saying?

     I said, ‘‘It’s okay. She won’t be a problem.’’
