Janey's Story

The end of the week approached and Janey had already spent most of her new life surrounded by Society books in the library. She listened carefully to Zera's warning not to trust Marilyn and spent most of her time doing her own research.

Saying she crossed the line of research would be an understatement. It became less of just a mischievous act and more of an addiction. She needed to know more. So much information she didn't even consider or black holes in the Society started to fill up her head. She knew it was risky and not just because Zera told her it was. She could feel it deep down.

She was researching too much, figuring out too much, understanding too much. It wasn't just risky anymore, it was practically suicide. She knew too much. And she knew she wasn't going crazy when she felt like people were watching her despite being in an empty room.

Janey was terrified. And not just of the Rebellion and Harrison anymore. She was terrified of Marilyn, of Zera, of Kyla and Cassidy, of Nicholas and Lincoln, of her deceased parents and brother, heck, she was terrified of herself. All the Society's deepest, darkest secrets linked in her mind like a puzzle she was too scared but needed to complete.

She became so familiar with the Society's most shady secrets that when Marilyn went out, leaving her library in Janey's care, she knew to expect the worst.

Janey was never the best at hacking but addiction does crazy things. In less than a week she became so good at hacking even the Society's best hacker couldn't compete.

Hacking into the librarians information and recent activity was a piece of cake. Finding what she was looking for, however, was the main problem here.

Hours flew by, more hairs on her body standing as they did. By nine at night, the library was eerily silent and on a normal occasion, that was enough to make Janey get the heck out of there immediately. But it also happened to be the exact time she found exactly what she was looking for.

And quite, frankly, she was disgusted.

Standing up immediately, she slammed her laptop shut and shoved it into her bag.

The library was empty, strange considering it was a school day and usually students came to study on days like that.

Right as she stepped out, she bumped into a lady that immediately seemed to be up to no good.

"Oh, hello." She spoke in fluent Singaporean which Janey knew nothing off.

She quickly excused herself, saying she was a foreigner and couldn't understand her at all. Janey tried walking past her but the lady grabbed her arm and shoved her one of the library's ancient brick walls.

Janey instantly felt the warm, tingling sensation of flowing blood but ignored it as she wrapped her cold fingers around the lady's neck, cutting her oxygen supply.

Needless to say, the Davies family were really good at strangling people for some reason.

She kneed the lady in the stomach a couple of times before she fell limply to the ground.

Janey didn't even wait a second afterwards, she sprinted to who knows where, knowing the lady couldn't possibly be alone.

She wanted to go to Zera and ask for back up but Nicholas's words rang in her ears. She couldn't trust anyone. With he bag strapped across her back and a bit of the money Nicholas had given her, tucked in her pocket for emergencies, she ran to a nearby train station and got tickets for the nearest train.

She never expected to leave the country but the nearest train led to the city closest to an airport.

With the Rebellion members being literally anywhere, she needed to leave the country immediately and go somewhere far away from the human kind. And fortunately for her, the next flight happened to be to Russia. And did she take it? Yes. Yes, she did.

In the next hour, Janey was boarding a flight to Moscow with only a small bag and money converted to the correct currency.

She told no one where she was going. In fact, she even left her phone on the train for safety precautions. As for her laptop, a couple of days prior as she was practicing her hacking she found out a way to make it impossible to track down.

While on the plane, she found a cabin deep in the mountains of Russia to stay at and as soon as she left the airport, she took a series of buses and trains that eventually led her there.
