I spent the better part of the last few days moving into my new apartment with the help of James, Kaitlyn and Grady. I was staying at Kaitlyn and Grady's tonight, though, because I still had a few more things to pack.
"Uh," Grady said as he peaked out the window. "Kaitlyn, Gerald's car is outside..."
"What?!" I yelled from the kitchen, nearly dropping my cup of juice. "What do you mean he's outside?"
Kaitlyn came down the hallway from the laundry room, coming up behind Grady to check it out.
"Oh, fuck," she said as she turned around to face me. "He's outside, Rachel. Does he know you're here?"
"No, I never told him that I moved," I said as I stood in the doorway of the kitchen. "Should I go talk to him?"
"No!" Grady said as he jumped up. "I'll go talk to him. You two stay here."
When Grady stood up, Bentley jumped up to the window and started growling and barking. Kaitlyn had to hold him back while Grady went outside. We left the door cracked so we could hear what they were saying.
"What are you doing here, man?" Grady asked, trying to start up a normal conversation. "I thought we weren't meeting until next week."
"Oh, cut the shit, man," Gerald slurred. I could tell he was either drunk or buzzed. Great. "I know Rachel's here. She moved back to the Bay."
My heart skipped a beat. I looked at Kaitlyn with wide eyes, and she looked at me. How did he know?
"Uh," Grady paused, trying to find the words to say. "How do you know she moved back? Have you talked to her?"
"No, I traced her location here on the Snapchat map," he said with a laugh. "Her location is here. She's inside right now, I bet."
"Rachel," Kaitlyn whispered. "Go up to the bedroom."
I shook my head, I needed to hear the rest of the conversation.
"Look, Gerald, you don't have the right to-"
"OH, BULLSHIT, GRADY!" Gerald yelled, throwing his hands up. "I have a right to know where she is. That's my fucking child she's carrying."
"Just a few weeks ago, you didn't want the baby," Grady said as he raised his voice. "Now all of a sudden you do?"
Gerald laughed, running a hand through his hair.
"Why are you keeping her from me?" He questioned. "You gotta crush on her?"
"What No," Grady said. "You know I'm with Kaitlyn, man. Rachel's just my friend."
"Let me in the house," Gerald said as he started walking up the yard, making Bentley start barking. "That's her fucking dog. She's in there."
Grady started to push him back to his car.
"No, Gerald," Grady said as he lightly shoved him backward. "You're drunk, okay? You need to go home and rest. Rachel doesn't need to see you and stress out, it's not good for the baby."
Gerald pushed him back, punching him in the face and shoving him backwards again. Kaitlyn screamed when she saw Grady fall, and I don't know what inspired me to do so, but I ran out there.
"RACHEL!" Kaitlyn yelled, still struggling to hold onto Bentley.
"You fucking asshole!" I yelled as I sank to my knees to pull Grady back up. "Why did you do that?!"
Gerald laughed, standing there in front of us.
"I knew you were in there," he said as he looked down at me. "I need to talk to you."
I stood up. For once, I wasn't scared of him.
"No," I said firmly. "You need to go home. You're fucking drunk and won't remember any of this in a few hours."
"You took off across the country and didn't think to tell me?" Gerald said as he moved closer to me, making me backup a few steps. "If you already would've had the thing, you would've been arrested."
I pushed him when he came closer. He just laughed.
"Don't call it a thing!" I yelled, tears filling up in my eyes. "It's a girl, actually," I wasn't going to tell anyone the baby was a girl, but I was angry.
Grady had gotten up and stood on the porch. Kaitlyn was holding Bentley, who was still growling.
"You thought escaping back to the one place you knew where I'd find you made sense?" He laughed. "You're dumber than I thought, Rachel."
"You're the dumb one, mother fucker!" I yelled, shoving him again. "You're the one who ran off because I said I was pregnant! You're not a man, you're a fucking coward."
"Don't call me that," Gerald said through gritted teeth. "I'm anything but a coward."
He stepped towards me again, but I shoved him, stepping backwards.
"You're a fucking coward, Gerald, that's all you are, and that's all you'll ever be," I cried as tears spilled over my cheeks. "You had no problem making this baby, but you run off when it's time to be a man."
"You're just as guilty as I a-"
I reached out and punched him right in the nose. Kaitlyn screamed as Gerald stumbled backward down Grady's yard.
"You fucking bitch," Gerald spat as he looked at me. His face grew red. "You've got another thing coming."
"What are you gonna do, Gerald? Choke me like you did last summer?" I questioned, my face growing hotter and hotter. "Go ahead. Show me how good of a man you are when you injure me and this baby."
The more I talked, the hotter my face grew. My heart was pounding rapidly in my chest and my knees began to buckle under me.
"S-show me how b-big of a man you are," I said as I stepped backward.
When I took a step, my knees gave out and I fell to the ground. Kaitlyn screamed, letting go of Bentley to run after me. Grady ran after Bentley to try and stop him from attacking Gerald.
"Don't just stand there, you fucking wanna be rapper," Kaitlyn yelled. "Call 911!"
That's the last thing I remember before it all went black.
