With the way the second floor of the restaurant was partitioned, from the corner in which they sat, Madoka and Satoru could clearly hear the voices of the newly arrived customers but they couldn't see them.

But with his keen memory, it was not difficult for Madoka to match the voice of the second speaker to the one of the valiant girl he had chanced upon in the nurse's office.

What he could not figure out was what she meant when she aggressively declared, "Before I defeat Semi Madoka, there is no eating!"

Why did this mysterious girl need to defeat him? Was there any enmity between them?

It was apparent that Satoru was also taken aback by the situation as there was a bewildered expression on his face.

Madoka shot his friend a look before he picked up his phone and sent a text over.

Madoka: [Stay quiet and don't do anything that'll alert them of our presence.]

After checking the text, Satoru gave him a questioning look, then made a reply.

Satoru: [Σ( ̄。 ̄ノ) Do you know know these people?]

Madoka: [Not likely.]

Satoru blinked very slowly.

Satoru: [Then you just want to see how the conversation unfolds?]

Madoka looked up from his phone and nodded.

After a moment of contemplation, Satoru flashed him a thumbs up to show him that he would comply. Eavesdropping was wrong but since Madoka was the subject being discussed, in a way they sort of had the prerogative to listen, right?

On the other side of the partition, in a world of their own, the chatter was lively.

"Ooh, if you're not eating then I'm free to take your share!"

"Sure, eat more and continue to grow. I've always wanted to know how it'd be like to be friends with the Tokyo Skytree. Is the change in altitude starting to affect you much? Is it getting harder to dress because your head is cold while your feet are normal?"

Madoka could not help but snorting lightly. Never had he heard such an inventive yet immature insult aimed at a person's height.

"Make one more dig about how tall I am and I swear I'll smush your cheeky little face into this tray of fries."

"Did you interpret it as a dig? It was meant to be sincere praise. I'm happy you have at least one thing going on for you. But if you insist on smushing my face then go ahead, Fuu-chan. My beauty can't be mired by just grease and ketchup alone."

At this last sentence, Satoru squinted his eyes in laughter while Madoka used a hand to cover the raised corners of his lips that could not be suppressed. The level of confidence that this girl possessed was commendable.

From this exchange, they surmised that the group of customers on the other side of the partition consisted of three girls affectionately known as "Shii-chan" , "Mii-chan" and "Fuu-chan."

Her last name is Yoshino so the "Shi" probably relates to her first name.

Madoka mentally listed all of the female names that he knew of that started with "Shi".

On the other side, the girl known as Fu-chan huffed. "You see this, Mii-chan? See it? There's absolutely zero need to worry about this annoying girl. Ze-Ro! If she could substitute hubris for food she'd never be hungry!"

"Wow, Fuu-chan used a big word like hubris. Amazing. So well-read. Such a smart mountain she is —" Her words were abruptly cut off and instead replaced with sounds of struggle. "Ew! Unhand me, villain! Your hands are covered by oil and salt! Get her off me, Mii-chan!"
