MJ and Tyler had just finished up at the gym when she checked her phone to find some messages from Caroline. The texts made her sound freaked out enough, but it was the voicemail that meant MJ had to check in on her, the way she could feel Caroline shaking through the phone was unnerving. Luckily part of Caroline's messages had been to ask if MJ wanted to have a sleepover.
She went to the address she'd been sent and knocked cautiously at the door.
Sheriff Forbes opened it, rubbing her eyes and in a dressing gown, "Hello?"
"Hi, I'm MJ," She put on her best parent-pleaser smile, "Caroline asked me to sleep-over? Sorry, if she didn't tell you...I can go," MJ pointed behind her.
The Sheriff opened the door a little more, "You're the new girl, aren't you?"
"That's me."
"And Caroline invited you over?"
MJ nodded, "Yep, plus, I know she left the carwash early so I wanted to check in on her?"
That seemed to get the Sheriff's approval and she opened the door properly, motioning for MJ to come in with her eyes.
Interesting.
The Sheriff was the person who'd seen all the dead bodies, and the mountain lion, and then approved the cover story, so unless MJ had just met the biggest idiot in town, that non-verbal invitation was a test to see if she was a vampire. If anyone was going to know about the Supernatural, you'd hope it'd be the Sheriff.
MJ stepped over the threshold.
The woman smiled, "Call me Liz."
"Nice to meet you Liz, is Caroline upstairs?"
"Yeah, just head on up," Liz looked around, "But, uh, well, she seems to be a little down – is there something going on I should know about?"
"I, I don't really know, I'm still pretty new."
MJ didn't want to lie to the Sheriff, but she also couldn't just out Caroline's situation, or make it seem like she knew more than she should. That would land her on the radar of the one person who could easily run a background check, and MJ didn't want that.
She just wanted to be there for Caroline.
"I'm just here to be a friend."
"Well, if you girls need anything..."
"Thanks, sorry for encroaching."
"No! It's fine, just happy Caroline's making another friend."
MJ bobbed her head and headed up the stairs, knocking softly on one of the bedroom doors, one that had a light on underneath it. There wasn't a reply so she knocked a little harder.
"Go away, mum."
"Not your mum," MJ slowly pushed it open and tried for a smile.
Caroline sat up on her bed, dressed in pyjamas but with her laptop open. Her breathing picked up a little as she jumped up and tackled MJ in a hug.
"I'm so sorry."
"For what?"
"I don't know why I went there – I don't," she buried herself into MJ's shoulder and MJ rubbed her back.
"Caroline, everything's okay," MJ batted the door shut with her foot, inching Caroline back towards her bed.
"I can't remember what happened."
"What do you remember?"
Caroline sat back on the bed and MJ moved the desk chair so she could sit opposite her, holding her hand. Caroline started squeezing it tighter and tighter and MJ let her.
