Your POV
"Hmm. Fascinating." Merlin opened and closed the fridge door.

"But how do you know the light goes out when you close the door?" He asked as he opened it and closed it multiple times.

"I never expected Merlin to be in my house." Barbara said.

"You've had trolls, goblins, a formling, and Changelings here. Why not a wizard?" I asked as Toby and I set up the table. Merlin came out and sat at the table while Toby and I sat on the couch.

"So Gunmar stole your staff. Isn't that all he needs to make the, um, the, the-"

"The Eternal Night, mom." Jim said as he came and sat down with Toby and I.

"Fear not, Mother of Jim. When I designed my staff, I put in a safe guard." Merlin said.

"See? We're in good hands." Jim said as he handed me a plate and I thanked him.

"Then again, no safeguard is a guarantee. It's been centuries since I've eaten. Metalface here was lucky I don't eat him back in the cave." Merlin said and our eyes widened and Toby dropped his fork.

"He's joking, right?" Toby asked us nervously.

"Mm, not really. Time is of the essence. Take me to the nearest blacksmith at once." Merlin said and we got up and led him to the garage.

"We have a couple of tools and some old Christmas decorations. Will that work? Or... What are you making exactly?" Jim asked.

"It's none of your concern now. No forge? No grindstone? Not even a bellows?" Merlin asked and we looked at each other confused.

"No. But Jimbo has a garage door. Check it out!" Toby said as we all watched him open and close the garage door. Merlin sighed.

"This will have to do."

"Well, when you said you put in a safeguard, how long to safeguards typically guard...safely?" I asked.

"Yeah, are we talking weeks? Years?" Toby asked. Merlin started kicking Jim's vespa so he shoved him out of the way and looked at it.

"Depends on Gunmar's cleverness. A few hours." Merlin answered.

"But you can stop him, right?" Toby asked.

"I have lost my magic. But this old bucket knows a few spells. I need you to acquire a few items first." Merlin said.

"What sort of items?" Jim asked.

"I'm sure nothing too difficult to gather. Lend me your quill. I shall write you a list." He answered.

"We're fresh out of quills." Jim said.

"Can you text it?" Toby asked as he held up his phone.

We were walking into school as Jim was holding the list.

"Wow, thanks." PT 2Where stories live. Discover now
