Qiaoli grew skeptical. When the Emperor wanted to make a deal with her, she knew it was because she could be used as a pawn to make her brother agree with the Emperor. But now, this old man was saying that he was here specifically to ask her for help to contact that powerful person she met a few times.

Headmaster Fan looked like he was stuck in a desperate situation. He still wanted to persuade the marquise.

"Headmaster, if you need that person's help, you should find him with your abilities. We had no connection aside from that day fourteen years ago. I can't possibly make him appear out of nowhere. Please go back." She looked down at the floorboards as she realized why the headmaster brought Hong Shu Cao and Hong Ting here.

He was trying to appeal with her emotional ties to the Hong family.

Huang Qiaoli smiled and personally showed Headmaster the way out. The old man was downtrodden but didn't let his head droop. He still carried the dignity of Hanjing Academy's Headmaster.

Yemin was trying to figure out why their family's marquise needed to walk the headmaster out until she spoke.

"Headmaster, I'm thankful for everything but this fate ends today. All the people under the heavens need to walk their own ways. I wish you all the best."

Headmaster Fan was surprised to hear these words. Just a while ago, the Marquise talked with a cold face. What happened to her?

At the corner of his eyes, he saw the Hong father and son among his retinue and understood. Although there was a 'Headmaster' at the beginning of her sentence, it wasn't meant for him at all.

Huang Qiaoli, Si Hai and Yemin watched the people from Scholars' Guild go.

Surprisingly, it was the fox who spoke first. "Lady, you're simply too cruel."

The child had a bitter smile on his tender face, an expression unbefitting of his 'age'.

Qiaoli looked at him. "What? To be merciful, am I supposed to bring them to Huo Ai?"

She scoffed as she walked back to the main court. "The world is cruel. Success can be reached through great pains. Without pain, how can you value what you have now? That child needs to understand that the world isn't rainbows and butterflies. If he passes this trial, nothing can stop him."

It was rare for Si Hai to hear something so serious from this woman. Indeed, mean people had a nasty outlook in life.

It was Yemin who pretended that he didn't see the trace of scarlet on the young marquise's sleeves. She must have wounded her palms while holding back her emotions. Yemin confirmed that their family's marquise truly cared for that Hong family.

He needed to pass their miss' wishes to the Duke. What she couldn't do, the Duke would do for her.

"Marquise is correct. This servant supports the Marquise."

Qiaoli paused to look back at Yemin. She saw him sporting a kind smile but her eyesight seemed to blur.

"Oy, are you crying?" Si Hai interjected.

She pursed her lips and blinked a few times. "I'm not."

Yemin held back from smiling too much because now wasn't the time for that.

But it was the fox who was insensitive. "Oh heavens, I can't believe this! You can actually cry?"

The marquise ignored the fox but his little figure chased after her, marveling at the sight of the maiden's unshed tears.

Yemin heard the marquise calling him so he jogged and plucked the fox from the ground so he wouldn't bother her anymore. Si Hai knew that he couldn't fight this man. It wasn't because he wouldn't win, it was because he was afraid the Duke would tell the others to gang up on him so he let Yemin grab his collar.
