Kaelyn Greene had already lost her mother at a young age, and had lost her father numerous times throughout the years. No child should ever have to endure that pain.

One day, Marcus Greene leaves his daughter at the door of an old friend's house, expecting him to care for her. As surprised as Alan Powell was, he did. He didn't have the heart to turn the girl away.

As his family takes Kaelyn in, they begin to realize how used to this she is, and after realizing that Marcus was never coming back, Alan and his wife must make many decisions. All while Alan was changing his career, and his family was expecting a new baby.

- Kaelyn is very desensitized to life; she lost her mother, and her father began to spiral
- his addiction is up to the author
- to cope with this, Kaelyn focuses on school in order to get herself out of the situation. college is her ticket out of this
- she's cold to Alan's family
- and she doesn't start to warm up until the end, when her father completely abandons her
- and despite all that's going on in the Powell family, Alan and Brycie decide to go to court and foster her.
- again, this doesn't solve any of Kaelyn's issues
- she's not easily trusting, she's atheist and still very desensitized
- if she's to break those walls, it's going to be a lot of work
- but how she works through that is up to the author
- and so is the ending
- but I do see the Powells adopting her possibly
- the whole point is that Kaelyn learns to rebuild her busted heart now that she's no longer in a toxic environment
