Katherine's POV

It had been a few minutes of silence since Lucian told me about what happened with his mother. I didn't know what to say.

I wouldn't say it came as a surprise, it was more like a realization. A realization of why the Kingdom is as it is and why Daniel wanted Lucian branded, which was so he could prove his loyalty.

"Well, is that what you wanted?" I asked referring to what he said about his mother.

He scoffed and brushed his back against the log once more, "What do you think?" he looked at me with his deep piercing eyes. Based on his response I could tell he had a heavy heart.

We continued to bask in the silence that wrapped around the thick air. "What about the sea creatures you told of?" I said cutting the silence in half.

"You're just full of curiosity, aren't you?" He smirked sending a sly glance my way. I couldn't help but smile.

As a kid, the only thing that would bring me comfort was storytelling, then as I grew up I became more invested in novels.

To me, stories are kind of a safe place where my imagination can run as wild and free as it pleases.

He grabbed one of the sticks and drew a huge circle on the grass by digging the stick a little deeper into the soil. And but pieces of sticks and rock inside the circle, there were seven in total.

I looked at the odd picture in front of me trying to piece together what was in front of me. "What are those?" I asked while shifting a little away from Lucian so I could sit comfortably.

"Those are the Seven Realms," he whispered while focusing intently on completing his masterpiece.

"The realm of the dragons, the realm of the giants, ice realm, the realm of fire, the realm of water, earth realm, and the realm of the dead," I remembered tales when I was going up with Lady Morgan, for bedtime stories Eleanor would tell us stories of the ice prince and fire princess.

"Getting to all the other realms is relatively difficult except for one," he then took one of the two stones and put it next to each other. "Expect for the realm of water and earth, Llewelyn and I were travelling by sea about 250 years ago when a storm started to brew," he then grabbed the other stones that represented realms and placed them all together so they were connecting.

"We had stumbled upon the portal between earth and the realm of water, the portal was the entire body of water, mermaids lived beneath the sea level." I silently listened as I imagined how mermaids looked.

I couldn't help but think about Ariel and wonder if the mermaids looked like her. Did they wear seashells as a bra, I inwardly chuckled at the thought.

"They were attacking the ship with their tails and in the process, Llewelyn fell overboard, and that's how he met his mate." I heard about supernaturals having mates but it didn't occur to me that it could be a crossbreed.

"She's a mermaid?" I whispered quietly while looking at Llewelyn to make sure he was still asleep.

"Clarissa is a half mermaid half-human. She has her tail and a voice that sounds like pure bliss but she doesn't have any mermaid powers." Ah so she was a mongrel, I secretly wished I could meet her and ask her to show me her tail but I kept my excitement controlled as Lucian said the most fascinating things.

"Sea creatures are very tricky, there are mermaids, mermen, and sirens and they don't like it when they or their homes are threatened. Impulsive little things."

I asked more about what he had said about the creatures of the sea but unwillingly a yawn escaped from my mouth.

We've probably been talking for the past two hours. At this very moment, I felt so fascinated with him, just talking about his travels around the world.

I had grown comfortable being around Lucian, I felt safe and protected. Ironically, I didn't feel this way last week and that's what he was there for.

"What's going to happen when we get to the academy?," a yawn escaped my lips while I struggled to keep my eyes open.

I couldn't help but ask, I knew we were going for recruits but how were we going to decide who to recruit? I waited for his answer and I didn't know when exhaustion took over my body and I slipped into a slumber.
