Third Person POV

Stage and Smokes walked along the streets of Manhattan, back to the Manhattan Lodging House.

Spot and Cards had let them go for a walk together.

Was this a bad idea?

They weren't sure.

They let them go anyway.

Smokes took Stage through a passage of alleys that he knew were shortcuts to get to the Lodge.

Also a really horrible idea.

Newsies and alleyways. Not a mix that usually ends well.

Smokes grabs Stage's hand when an all too familiar voice spoke. "Smokes Jackson. How have you been?"

"Spot still treating you well?" Another voice spoke this time from behind them. "And Ace?"

"Stick by me, don't trust these two" Smokes whispers to Stage, who nods.

A frightened feeling filled Stage, as she clung to Smoke's hand.

"And who's this?" The first voice questions, causing Smoke's jaw to clench.

Someone grabbed Stage, pulling her away from Smokes, as the other person pulled Smokes away from Stage.

"Could it be the Second in command of the Drifters? Stage Owens" The second voice states, as Stage turns away from them.

"Hey!" Smokes shouts, kicking the first person in the crotch, before running over to Stage.

Smokes grabs Stage's wrist, pulling her to him and away from the second person.

"Overprotective, aren't you, Smokes?" The first voice laughs. A feeling of dread filled Stage, she didn't like his laugh. It wasn't happy, just cruel. "And you've gotten stronger. Seems your time with Brooklyn is paying off."

"Stay away from Stage." Smokes' voice was dangerously low and Stage didn't like that either. "And while you're at it, stay awake from me and Brooklyn."

The first voice laughs again, finally stepping into the light. "I can't do that, and you know it."

The boy had midnight black hair, and really dark eyes. His skin wasn't very dark, but it wasn't very light either.

He looked mean, and that alone gave Stage the chills.

Like, when Stage first met Cards, and Smokes, and Jack, they didn't have a mean look to them like this boy, Oscar, and Morris.

"No, you won't." Smokes responds. "Can't and won't are two very different words. Do you need me to tell you their definitions?"

The two boys share a look, telling Smokes that they didn't know what 'definition' meant.

"'Can't' means you can not do something, like Jack can't spell the word adolescent." Stage whispers, drawing the attention to her, as she clung to Smokes, eyes closed. "'Won't' means you will not do something, like Jack has vowed that he won't let anyone hurt his Newsies."
