In late 2018, Tom Holland was essentially torturing someone. His rusty brown hair had been shaved off, and his typically smiling eyes were sunken. Wearing a 1980s East German overcoat with the sleeves rolled up, he was holding some poor man's head in a bucket of ice cold water. Then, the director called, "cut!".
Holland, the twenty-three year old British actor best known as Marvel's neighbourhood Spider-Man, the sweet-faced hero of the ever-expanding cinematic universe, was in character for The Grey City, a forthcoming film in which he plays a Dennis Pevensie, a British spy deep undercover in East Berlin. After filming the scene, Holland checks with his co-star (Ludwig Trepte) that he's okay and that he wasn't too deep in character that he brought actual harm. Trepte confirms that he's fine, and congratulates Holland on his performance. Then, Holland does what any young person might do in a moment of pride: he sent the footage of him torturing his co-star to his mother. "Biggest mistake ever," he says now, grinning. "I was like, 'This is how my day's going,' and she was furious with me."
