DURING THE REST of the day, Draco could not stop thinking about what had happened, what he had seen. He did not understand why Annelisse would do an Unbreakable Vow and —above all— he did not stop thinking that that was the real reason why she disappeared. He needed answers, to talk to someone, and he could only do it to one person.
After work, before meeting Daphne, he met Mittie. He needed to talk to her about this as soon as possible and even ask her if she knew anything about all this, something he hoped she did not.
They had met at Draco's house, he had just told her what happened with Annelisse that morning at the Ministry while he did not stop walking from one side of the room to the other.
Mittie —still incredulous at the information—, poured herself another glass of wine and gulped it down. She made a face at the wine, feeling how scratchy it was before speaking "Are you sure?" She finally asked Draco, still freaking out.
He stopped and approached her again "I saw it, Mittie. They don't always leave a mark but other times they do and I can recognize one when I see it." He explained, frustrated.
"I didn't know anything, Draco. Now I understand why she was trying so hard to wear gloves." She widened her eyes for a second.
"Why would she do something like that?" He snorted heavily, bringing the hands to his waist. "What did she do, promised, to have to leave?"
"Draco, we can't draw conclusions like that out of nowhere. We don't know anything about it, we don't know if it has to do with what you think." She moved her hand as she spoke.
"Clearly has something to do with it, Mittie. We were happy!" He said bringing his hand to his chest, tapping it "You don't just— go away. It has to be that." He said with some nerves and some anger at the situation, pointing with his finger.
"And we can't ask her directly, can we?"
"She always avoids the subject, it would not be surprising if there was a clause in the Vow in which it says that she cannot tell anything about it."
"She really had no choice..." Mittie said with some surprise, realizing, almost without voice. In a way, she understood that in the face of an event like this —an Unbreakable Vow— a person could die if it is not allowed to speak about it.
"But that's no excuse not to send a paltry letter, Mittie." Draco replied.
"You don't know the clauses of the Vow, you don't know what she had to promise, Draco." Mittie snapped at him "She could have really died!" Raised her voice to him, expressing herself with the hands.
At that, Draco froze, feeling his world almost falling apart. Mittie was right in her words, something he had not realized until now "She could have died..." He repeated, barely without voice.
Mittie got up, approaching him "I know you have more reason than anyone to be mad at her, so am I, but if she really was in danger..." She sighed heavily "I don't know, Draco. I love her too much. And even if you don't want to hear it, I know you do too. "
"Well." he simply replied.
"Do you really want to lose her again?" She looked at him seriously, but with concern in her gaze "Because even though I am extremely angry with her, I don't want that to happen again."
"I — I don't know, Mittie. It's all very complicated now." He ran his hand over his face in frustration as huffed "I don't know what to do, what not to do. No one expects to see someone they thought dead from one day to the next again."
"Look," she said approaching him and rested her hand on his shoulder, "I'm not saying you go back together, pretend nothing has happened. Just that — I can't get her out of my life that simply, and neither can you, Draco. It's not bad to admit it. "
Draco just looked at Mittie, thinking and pondering her words, believing that maybe she was right.
"She is my best friend, but you are too. I don't want to see you suffer, we have had a bad time these years, you know it well." He smiled, chuckling at that thought. They had spent many nights together thinking about her, crying over her and reminding her "You can't run away from everything that happens around you anymore, Draco." She said in a soft tone, trying to make him see reason.
He lowered his head at the same time that he bit his lip, a little nervous "Although it is difficult for me to admit it, you are right." He finally raised his head to look at Mittie.
"You deserve to be happy Draco, more than anyone. Why do you keep banning it?" She asked with some sadness in her voice "We'll find a way to help her if that's what she needs, okay?"
Draco could not help but feel relieved. He appreciated and adored that Mittie was so good to him, a true friend. He moved closer to her and the two of them merged in an embrace, releasing a sigh between it.
"Besides, we still have to tell the others." She whisperef into that hug.
Draco, hearing those words, pulled away from her, slightly scared "I hadn't thought of that. I haven't even talked to my mother."
"Well, what do you think if, for the weekend, we all meet together and see how things are going?" She smiled.
"Sounds good, although I'm a bit scared." He frowned.
"Why don't you go see her and invite her?" She suggested "So maybe at last you can have a normal conversation." She slightly rolled her eyes.
"I need to talk to Daphne first. I know she doesn't like the idea of Annelisse coming back even though she constantly denies it. She's worried." He replied.
Mittie just pressed her lips together and nodded. She knew that it was a sensitive issue, that now each one had a life and the reality was that Draco was with Daphne, although she was also aware that Annelisse had always been present.
"She starts working in the Ministry again on Wednesday." Draco commented out of nowhere, breaking the silence.
"Does Daphne know?" She pointed out.
"Yes." he said on a sigh "I don't want to hurt Daphne, Mittie. I really like her. It's just that — this is all too complicated." He explained.
"I know." Mittie looked down at the ground thoughtfully. She was thinking about her, about everything she had to go through all these years. Annelisse really had no choice and Mittie was trying to understand what her motives had been "What are we going to do now?" She asked, looking up at him again.
"I don't know." He answered serious.
