I spent the next few weeks avoiding Professor Umbridge as much as possible, I refused to speak in her class and rarely left the dungeons unless someone met up with me prior. I always knew I had a mouth, I knew how to defend myself but Umbridge was a different kind of person.. a sick person, she enjoyed watching the pain students felt as they wrote in detention and I wanted no part of it. Dumbledore had been removed as head master and replaced by Umbridge herself.
I was sitting in the back of the common room a little after midnight, it was dark except for the lights that were on in the hallways to the dorms. I had my knees pulled up to my chest I stared down at my hand, the scar faint but still noticeable and raised. The sound of footsteps broke my concentration as I quickly looked over to see who it was, low and behold it was Malfoy, he wore sweats and a black hoodie as he made his way to the exit, I took no time in following him. I left the common room cursing myself for not wearing shoes but I also was glad I didn't that way he wouldn't know I was trailing him. He made his way up the stairs turning corners the only light provided by the moon and a few torches that were lit.
"Mr. Malfoy." The awful shrill of Umbridge sounded through the corridor ahead, I hid behind a wall as I saw Draco stop in his tracks. "What are you doing out of your room this time of night." She asked stepping forward. Does this women ever sleep? I thought to myself.
Dracos eyes went wide as he quickly thought of an excuse. I stepped out from around the corner.
"He was looking for me ma'am." I spoke up my arms folded over my chest.
"Miss Evans, I wish I could say I was surprised that you're breaking the rules but it seems that you enjoy detention so I will see you later this evening in my room." She smiled.
"Y-Yes ma'am." I nodded.
"Draco please escort Miss Evans back to the Slytherin common room." Umbridge instructed, he nodded and turned around looking at me, the look of relief and gratitude on his face. Umbridge watched as he walked up to me I turned around and began walking back to the dungeons him not to far behind. Once we made it down a flight of stairs and away from Umbridge Draco grabbed my arm turning me around.
"Why were you following me?" He asked. "Why are you awake? Better yet why did you take the fall for me?"
I looked at his face unsure whether he was angry, relieved still or confused.
"I took the fall for you because I know what happens in detention and much to your dismay I'm not a shitty person who wants anyone to experience detention with Umbridge, even you Draco. And I was awake because I can't sleep." I responded the sound of his first name coming out of my mouth surprising me.
"Thank you." He nodded. "I appreciate you doing that." He said rubbing his face.
"Draco?" I asked shifting on my feet.
"Yeah?"
"Why do you hate me? I mean I know my parents being muggles is an issue for you but I just.. I don't get why you hated me from the moment you talked to Snape. I didn't choose my family Draco, I didn't choose to have parents who were muggles, I didn't chose to be sorted into Slytherin. I can promise you I haven't chosen most things I have been dealt in my life. So why? Why do you hate me for things I can't change?"
"Indie I... I don't hate you." He sighed. "My family does, my family hates anyone that has to do with muggles, in their eyes muggles are scum, worthless, vile. If they had their way muggles and people like you would be dead." He spoke with frustration, his hand running through his hair. "It's like you, I didn't choose my family, I didn't choose my life but I can't take any of it back.. and if I were to befriend you.." he started. "If I were to befriend you Indie you'd get hurt, or.. or even killed. I want you to hate me, I want you to want no damn part of my life because I don't think people who grew up like you deserve to die.. no one does. But if I befriend you you're going to get hurt, and if you continue to follow me or try and figure out what I'm doing you'll get hurt. So please.. stop." At this point Draco face only showed hurt, he was hurt by how he had treated me, how he treated many students at this school.
"Draco, I know we both grew up in lives we didn't choose but I can promise you.. we aren't so different. I'm not a monster, and if you need someone to talk to about whatever you're doing.. sneaking out to do you can talk to me.."
"Thanks Indie, but like I said you could get hurt, I have to do this.. I have to do it by myself so please I beg you, stop trying to figure it out and leave it."
I nodded.
"Thank you." Draco nodded a small smile forming on his lips.
"So does this mean we're like secret friends? We hate each other on the outside but like we're Uber besties who gossip together now in random corners?" I joked.
"Yeah. I think it does Evans." He chuckled.
"I'm going to head to bed Draco, please be careful."
"I will." Draco nodded and watched me walk back to the dungeons before turning back around on his heels to head in another direction.
I knew what Draco was doing wasn't good for anyone, but Little did I know that it was going to affect me in more ways than one.
(This timeline is kinda off so please bear with me! It will all come together somehow. Things are going to be happening out of order a lot in the next little bit.💚)
