Keefe's P.O.V
"C'mon guys we have to figure out something," Keefe said, sitting with the rest of the group.
"I don't know, we've searched in so many places and have found nothing," Fitz said.
"But San Diego is huge! We probably missed so much," Linh reasoned.
"See? Now you guys understand why I was telling you how this mission would be impossible!" Tam spat, glaring at everyone.
"Stop being so negative," Biana snapped, glaring at Tam. Tam glared right back.
Right. Looks like the secret lovers are still fighting.
Keefe was also to blame for the whole locking Bangs Boy outside incident but it was best that Tam would not be reminded of that.
In other circumstances, Keefe would probably be pulling a bunch of pranks on Tam and working more to annoy him with whatever he was hiding but with Sophie with the Neverseen, it was hard to act like everything was normal.
Keefe just had to focus. He would find a way to get Foster free.
But with Forkle still recovering from his injuries, they were down on help.
"Well, we need to change to a different location anyways since they already know we are staying here. So maybe at the new location we will have new places to search?" Linh suggested.
"No, just searching won't help us. We need to start getting actual leads— somehow," Biana said.
"Maybe we could ask Grady's group for help," Keefe suggested.
"But what are they gonna do? They're across the country," Fitz argued.
Before Keefe could respond, he felt a vibration in his pocket coming from his phone.
"Who is it?" Biana asked as Keefe pulled out his phone to see who it was.
When Keefe read the name, he paled.
His dad.
Why on earth was he calling Keefe?! He never did!
Keefe thought about ignoring it like he usually did but he had to admit he was curious to see why his careless father was contacting him now.
"What?" Keefe asked, having an edge in his voice.
He heard his dad sigh on the other end. "Is that how you really greet your father?"
"You haven't earned that title," Keefe said, gritting his teeth. He looked up to see his friends looking at him with curiosity and whispering who it was.
Keefe ignored them as his dad replied, "looks like you haven't matured even after college. Speaking of, they notified me wondering about your long absence. This is serious son, and you shouldn't be messing this up—"
"Is this seriously what you called me about?! I couldn't care less about college, I have other plans," Keefe yelled.
"By other plans, do you mean your opera career?" His dad asked.
Keefe's eyes widened. How did his dad know?!
This wasn't good-
"How did you come up with that nonsense? An opera career? Seriously?" Keefe scoffed, pretending it had nothing to do with him.
"Son, don't play with me. I saw your face on a billboard today. It's actually what I called you about. You have a huge performance coming up in a few days," he continued, unimpressed.
Keefe felt himself starting to panic. He had completely forgotten about his huge performance that he had coming up.
Plus, his dad knowing about it made it worse. He would probably show up just to embarrass Keefe at the performance and to show everyone what a disappointment he was.
Keefe tried to move past all the hurtful things his dad had done to him, especially since he is an adult now and should have nothing to do with his father. But part of him was still frightened by his dad.
"Look son, I know you're up to something lately. But I would advise you don't miss this performance," his dad continued.
"Are you serious right now? Are you actually encouraging this?!" Keefe questioned.
"Why wouldn't I? I'm your father after all," he replied.
"Stop it, you're lying. You don't care. You want something and you're trying to play some game," Keefe raged, feeling himself losing control.
None of this made any sense!
His dad obviously wanted something!
"This isn't a game son. Take my advice seriously. College won't help you so this is your only chance for a future," he continued.
Keefe closed his eyes and clenched his fists. "Don't even act like you care."
"You know, this way you're speaking to me is not acceptable. Don't make me remind you of who I really am."
Keefe instantly felt fear so he cooled himself down a bit before he spoke again. "I don't know what you want, but know that I'm an adult now and you can't control me."
"Yes son I—"
Keefe hung up, cutting his dad off. At this point, he didn't know what to feel but he knew talking to his dad wouldn't help.
"Who was that?" Biana asked, getting up.
"Sweet loving father," Keefe said, sighing as he put his phone away.
"Oh no, what did he want?" Linh asked, looking worried. Everyone had their attention on Keefe now, they all knew how his dad was.
"It's nothing guys," Keefe said, shrugging it off.
"No, we know it was something," Biana pushed.
Keefe sighed, really not wanting to talk about it. "He just mentioned some weird stuff about wanting me to perform at that big performance that's coming up."
"Really? That's great," Fitz said, looking confused.
"No, it's not great. It means my dad is up to something. He's never cared about anything I've ever liked," Keefe said, feeling himself get worked up again. Just talking about it made him feel worse.
"Is there anything we can do?" Biana asked, looking worried.
"It's fine, I just don't want to talk about it," Keefe said.
"So are you going to perform?" Mr. Forkle asked, causing everyone to jump as he slowly made his way out of one of the rooms and made an appearance.
He carefully sat down on one of the couches, obviously struggling.
"Wow Forkleman, how long have you been eavesdropping on our conversations?" Keefe asked, smirking.
Mr. Forkle narrowed his eyes. "I was not eavesdropping! I was simply making my way out since you kids were so loud and I overheard that last bit. Also you're avoiding my question."
Keefe sighed. "Why would I even do it? We're supposed to be searching for Sophie."
"But isn't this the perfect time? I need to be recovering and you guys have no current leads so why don't you take a break and do something that you love to keep you sane? This has been rough on you kids so you guys could really use a break," Mr. Forkle reasoned. Keefe shrugged, looking down.
"Mr. Forkle is right. This is the perfect time, Keefe! You should start practicing," Biana said. She then leaned in closer and whispered, "do it for Sophie."
Keefe looked up and locked eyes with Biana and he knew that she meant every word.
Maybe they were right. Maybe this was the right thing to do, even if his dad suggested it too.
Which was still very suspicious.
But Keefe decided that he would do this and hopefully it would make his current life a bit better.
He would do it for Sophie.
