TW: blood

solitude can do funny things to the mind ☂

Voices cut into the edge of my hearing, and fuzzy lines appear in the corners of my eyes.

Am I in heaven?

Oh, I hear Luther. Never mind.

'Y/n,' Five's voice whispers. 'Y/n.'

My eyelids flicker open.

'Oh...hi.'

'You moron!' He says angrily. 'Why'd you take that bullet?'

Despite myself, I smile.

'Where's my thank you?'

'You'll get it when you don't die, okay?'

'She lost a lot of blood,' Alison says.

'I'll be fine,' I murmur.

'You don't know that,' Five says.

'Is that concern I hear?' Luther asks with surprise. 'Five actually cares for another human being! It's a miracle.'

'Shut it,' Five grumbles.

'I can't get the bullet out,' Alison sighs.

'I can do it,' I mumble, trying to sit up. Pain sears through my stomach, but I grit my teeth. 'I'm fine.'

'You're not fine,' Five says.

'I am.' I say unconvincingly.

Red spots appear in my vision as the words leave my mouth. So maybe I'm not fine. But I will be.

Huffing, I hover my hand over the wound, jerking it up. The small gold bullet flies out, and I have to stop myself from screaming as pain shoots through my chest.

It lands on the floor a couple feet away and I collapse back on the ground. Five catches my head, lowering it onto a pillow. A fresh stream of blood escapes my stomach and I wince at the sight, and coppery smell.

'I can handle it from here,' Five nods, glancing up at our siblings.

'You sure?' Alison asks, handing him a cloth. He presses it to my stomach, stopping the blood flow from getting worse.

He nods. 'Thank you.' He says begrudgingly.

'Sure,' Luther says gruffly.

'Five, your shoulder's bleeding,' I point out softly.

'Y/n, why would you do that?' He ignores his injured shoulder. 'Why would you jump in front of me like that? Why didn't you use your powers?'

I shrug weakly. 'Didn't occur to me.'

He rolls his eyes.

'Can I just sleep?'

Five nods finally. 'Here.' He grasps my hand, blinking me upstairs to his room.

'In your room?'

'I didn't think you wanted to go back to the basement,' Five blinks, with a hint of amusement.

I laugh weakly. 'No.'

He gives me a pillow.

'Thanks.'

'Don't mention it.'

'What about your shoulder?'

'Don't mention that either.'

'Wait!' I say.

'What's wrong?'

'We left Dolores,' I squeeze my eyes shut, waiting for Five to get angry.

He swallows. 'That doesn't matter.'

I tip my head to the side. 'Oh?'

'I almost let you die,' Five lowers his voice. 'Again.'

'Thought you didn't care about me that way?' I smile slightly.

Five sighs, staring outside. He doesn't respond for several minutes.

'You...you're important to me,' Five looks away, his tone softening. 'As much as I hate to admit it, losing you would be like losing myself.'

I don't know what to say to that.

Maybe I didn't misread anything.

'Five,' My voice softens. He turns back to me.

I reach up, tucking a strand of hair out of his face.

'Mhm?'

'Your hair is fluffy.'

Five scoffs, hiding his laughter. 'Okay?'

'What about your shoulder?'

'You aren't going to let that go, are you?' Five gives in. 'Fine.'

He pulls his blazer off, chucking it at the ground. The shirt is next. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, he stops at his undershirt.

'Disappointed?' Five reads my expression, with a cocky grin.

'Sure.' I say. 'You wish.'

Five sighs, pulling out a needle and thread.

'Want help?' I offer.

'You're on bed rest,' Five says forcefully.

I roll my eyes.

He finishes his stitching, pulling on a new shirt.

'There's something I need to do.' Five says.

'I'm coming with you,' I say immediately.

'No you're not,' He answers without looking at me.

'You don't need to treat me like some fragile princess,' I huff. 'I'm fine.'

'Y/n, you just got shot,' Five says. 'I'd prefer if you slept for a while.'

'You'd prefer?'

'Yes I would.'

'Don't treat me like a child, Five. I can handle myself.' I swing my legs over the side of his bed, but as soon as my feet hit the floor, a wave of dizziness passes over me and I almost collapse.

Five catches me with one arm, pushing me back onto the bed.

'You sure about that?' He raises one eyebrow.

I'm not going to admit out loud that he's right.

Instead, I cross my arms, rolling over onto my other side.

'Bye.'

I can almost hear him smirking.
