Chapter 16

~the next day~

I put the last decorations up and stepped down from the chair. "Done!"

Riley sat down on the chair and I turned to her, "thanks again for helping Riley."

She nodded. "No problem."

I pulled up a chair next to her. "So umm... What was that text about last night?"

"What?" Riley said innocently.

"You never texted me back."

Riley pulled out her phone and laughed. "Oh I must've not seen it..."

"So what was it about?"

Riley put her phone back in her pocket and said, "it's not important, I just wanted to know. Yeah.."

I glanced at her, not believing her.

Lucky for her, the doorbell rang and I got up.

"Can you get Annie?" I asked Riley.

She nodded and headed towards her bedroom.

I opened the front door to see Kira. "Hey! Thanks for coming."

She smiled at me, stepping inside. "Thanks for inviting me!"

Riley came in with Annie in her hands and Kira walked over.

"She's so cute! Can I hold her?" She said.

Riley nodded, and handed her over to Kira.

I stepped up to them. "Riley, this is Kira from high school."

Riley didn't seem to remember but she nodded.

The front door opened again after awhile and in came Lucas and some of his co workers.

"You got off work, thank goodness." I said, giving him a side hug.

He nodded and muttered, "it wasn't easy..."

I let go of him. "Tough boss huh?"

Lucas laughed. "You could say that..."

I caught Riley looking in our direction and she came over.

She smiled at us and said, "Lucas can I talk to you?"

He shrugged and followed her into another room.

I followed them when Riley stopped me. "Just Lucas."

I stepped back, putting my hands up in surrender. "Okay then."

I went back to the living room and started talking to Lucas's co workers.

Riley led Lucas into an empty room in the house.

"Okay what I'm about to tell you you can't tell Maya." Riley said.

"Okay." Lucas agreed hesitantly.

Riley lowered her voice. "I know missy is your boss."

Lucas blinked. "Whatttt?? You mean the missy from high school?"

Riley rolled her eyes. "Don't act dumb with me, I saw her there once and she knew who I was."

Lucas nodded. "I have been keeping it from Maya too sooo."

They stopped and listened to the voices in the living room.

Riley turned to him. "please tell me you didn't invite her..."

"Missy? No way! She knows I'm having this party but I didn't give her an invite."

Riley sighed of relief. "Okay, let's go back before anyone suspects something."

They both walked back into the living room and Maya walked towards them.

"So what were you guys talking about?" Maya asked.

"Uhhh.."Riley and Lucas exchanged looks.

Riley turned to Maya. "We were talking about a surprise birthday present for you! Shhh."

Maya smiled and then walked to talk to Kira.

Thank goodness it was believable since Maya's birthday was the next month.

The party went by smoothly for awhile until there was a knock at the door.

Maya started to head over when the door opened, since it was unlocked.

"Sorry if I'm late." The person said, stepping into the house.
